Abstract The paradigm of evidence-based medicine has become a fundamental part of health care and health professions education since the 1990s, even as it has drawn criticism. Meanwhile, in the past decade, increased data collection and computational power have brought about advances in machine learning, such as diagnostic algorithms for pattern recognition in medical images. Machine learning has potential to address some of the limitations of evidence-based medicine, but also presents new questions about what counts as evidence in medicine. Critical appraisal of machine learning can become part of the teaching of evidence-based medicine.

Abstract Since 2019, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has transformed into a global pandemic, and studies on COVID-19 are crucial in finding solutions to deal with the pandemic. The objective of this study is to present a bibliometric analysis of COVID-19–related literature published in Pakistani medical journals. In this study, the PakMediNet database was searched for COVID-19–related literature on February 11, 2022. The required bibliometric data of each publication were documented in Microsoft Excel. About 67% of the 480 articles found were original articles, among which the vast majority (99%) were published in 2021 and 2022. Hamzaullah Khan, Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, and the National University of Medical Sciences were the most prolific author, journal, and institution, respectively. The most cited publication received 491 citations. Psychology and public health were the most preferred subjects. Pakistani medical journals have published a significant number of publications on COVID-19. However, international contributions and citations of these publications were low.

Abstract Three leading research databases—PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus—each offer unique ways of indexing citations and interpreting an article’s impact. Identifying the approach each takes to citation analysis and marking their distinctions has implications for not only scholars but information professionals engaged with medical reference.
三个领先的研究数据库——pubmed、Web of Science和scopus——每个都提供了索引引用和解释文章影响的独特方法。确定每种方法用于引文分析并标记其区别不仅对学者而且对从事医学参考的信息专业人员都有意义。

Abstract Bates Visual Guide to Physical Examination is a web-based companion to the text Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking by Lynn Bickley, MD. This site contains other multimedia features including video and audio. It is designed for students and faculty in medical, nursing, and related programs and provides head-to-toe and systems-based physical examination techniques. This review will assess its content, navigation, and search functions, and describe its special features.

Abstract The flood of publications during the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the challenge of information overload. The pandemic heightened the need for technologies that can assist researchers in keeping up with the literature. Approaches to organizing the COVID-19 literature included curation of specialized databases, aggregation of articles into a repository of machine-readable data, and application of text mining to the literature search process. Technologies developed for keeping up with the COVID-19 literature may have potential for improving in general the ability of researchers to keep up with the literature.

Abstract Medical librarians have an opportunity to suggest free smartphone apps to aid other healthcare professionals and their patients with the intent to increase and improve their physical activity (PA). This article includes research supporting the growing usage of smartphones in the United States among the overall population, specifically adolescents. Cost is often a deterrent in using smartphones PA apps; apps often claim to be free to download, but after usability testing, they usually have hidden costs. The apps selected for this article have been usability tested and reviewed to ensure that they are free of cost.
