Abstract Libraries need to regularly reassess their collections making mobile accessibility a top priority to meet the expanding needs of the remote patron. In the changing landscape of patron’s information-seeking behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic, users expect richer digital access with an eye toward mobile usage. Transitioning collections from print to electronic can also ensure that usage statistics are more reliable, and that the most valuable resources are being acquired.

Hey BERT! Meet the Databases: Explorations of Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformers Model Use in Database Search Algorithms 嘿伯特!与数据库相遇:从变压器模型在数据库搜索算法中的应用探索双向编码器表示

Abstract Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) is an open-source algorithm that allows for easier searching in search engines as it looks for natural language combinations in Google. The same algorithm could be applied to free database resources and commercial databases to make searching easier for users. This article examines the possibilities of BERT in resources other than Google. Many of our users come to database searching using Google type searches only to find controlled vocabulary is the way in which many databases are structured. If BERT is incorporated into popular databases along with controlled vocabulary, searching for information and finding it would be much easier for novice and advanced users, though careful consideration should be given to the search bias the algorithm may induce.

Abstract Data services, including consultation services for data management and data visualization, have been increasingly needed among health sciences libraries over the past decade, arising from mandates from funders and a need to effectively communicate information gleaned from a proliferating amount of data. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which U.S.-based health sciences libraries provide services and resources to meet data-related needs. To do so, the authors examined the webpages of American Association of Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) for published evidence of data-related services and resources. There were 157 library websites examined in total.

Abstract Librarians searching for gray literature often turn to Google®; however, other options exist that complement Google® searches. Two search engines, Million Short and Carrot2 Search, offer alternative places to search and locate gray literature. This review examines the search engines’ features, returned results, and possibilities for the future.

Abstract In recent years many schools have begun to incorporate virtual reality tools and programs into their curriculum. This paper relates the results of a library pilot project on the usefulness of virtual reality headsets and programming for graduate students studying physical therapy and medicine. Authors review the existing literature on virtual reality use in education with a specific focus on libraries. This information is incorporated into lessons learned by researchers regarding hardware and software choice, attracting students, and potential deterrents or safety issues relating to virtual reality use in libraries.

Options for Accessing Online Electronic Resources in Difficult Fiscal Times 在财政困难时期访问在线电子资源的选择
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2021-01-02 DOI: 10.1080/15424065.2021.1875944

Abstract Accessing electronic books and electronic journals both on- and off-campus is no longer a perk, but rather an expectation of community members. Providing access off-campus is expensive and requires constant monitoring. Further, costs for electronic journals continue to increase and publisher pricing models and products have changed. A 2019 survey of hospital, corporate, and academic librarians showed that libraries plan to continue using the decision-making procedures and policies they created a decade ago. If existing policies and procedures in libraries are not revisited and updated to meet challenges presented by the Digital Age, options for accessing electronic information will diminish.
