The pioneer species produced a relatively small number ofheavy seeds. Whereas dominants of thewintex annual stage produced a vast number ef light anemochere seeds. Total seed number mr2 produced by the stands were 144,222 for P. persicaria. 2,744,OlO for E. annuus and 223,408 for A. princeps-Oe. parvij7bra. The weight of seod biomass to total biornass ofthe stands decreased from pioneer to final stages of succession of herbaceous com-rnunities. The seecl production is discussed in relation to the type of lifo history of each species.

Tlie swamp forest in cool temperate Japan censists mainly of alder (AintAs japonica (THuNB.) SlEiuD.) and elm (Ulmus dovidVana PLANcH. var. J'aponica (REHD.) NAKAI). Aocording to TATEwAKI (l967), the former occurs at extremely wet sites and the latter at relatively mesic ones, though ash (F;'axinits mcindshurica RupR. var. japonica MAxiM.) dominates at intermediate sites between those of alder and elm forests in water condition.
