Multiple re-strikes phenomenon when using vacuum circuit breakers to start refiner motors 真空断路器启动精炼电机时出现多次重击现象

15 kV class vacuum circuit breakers have become the most popular method of starting large chip refiner synchronous motors. Multiple re-strikes, can occur in vacuum circuit breakers and may cause transient overvoltages at the motor terminals. This condition damages motor stator windings. The paper describes multiple re-strikes in vacuum circuit breakers and how they are measured. It also discusses the experience at Avenor's Canadian pulp and paper mills in Gold River, British Columbia and Thunder Bay, Ontario and at the QUNO mill, Thorold, Ontario, Canada. Included are modifications recommended to protect the refiner motors from further damage.

Dynamic system reliability study modeling 动态系统可靠性研究建模

System response and plant process response to equipment failure will considerably contribute to plant overall system reliability. So far most industrial plant reliability studies did not consider these effects on the system reliability. This paper presents a reliability study modeling which incorporates the system dynamic performance into system reliability evaluation. The system load reliability indices are derived by accumulating all system segment failure contributions. The modeling also includes equipment age and maintenance quality effects on equipment reliability indices using adjustment multiplier on component failure rates. The proposed modeling is demonstrated in an industrial distribution system.

Development of a method for estimating motor efficiency and analyzing motor condition 开发了一种估算电机效率和分析电机状态的方法

There is a need for an efficiency estimation tool that can be used easily and with a reasonable level of confidence so that motors can be evaluated for replacement with energy-efficient motors in a simple, cost-benefit analysis. In addition, it would be desirable to assess the condition of the motor at the same time the efficiency is being measured. This report provides an overview of various methods for estimating the operating efficiency of a motor without actually removing it from service and testing it on a dynamometer; the report also provides a concept for including a motor condition diagnostic into the same tool. The efficiency estimation and motor diagnostic tool needed for the cost-benefit analysis must be easy to use, without disrupting the operating process and must provide reasonable accuracy.

Applying unbalance detection relays with motor loads 应用电机负载的不平衡检测继电器

Prolonged operation under moderate to severe unbalanced supply conditions is well known to cause undesirable heating in motors. Occasionally, users are surprised that the protective relays intended to detect voltage unbalance will fail to respond. This paper reviews the definitions, calculation methods and standards of supply unbalance and compares the response of the corresponding detection techniques for various system configurations. It particularly points out the limitations of voltage unbalance measurement under certain open phase and load configurations.

Heat tracing is most often associated with winterization of piping, tanks and instrumentation. As such, its role in a pulp or paper mill's preventive maintenance program can be easily understood. However, many year-round plant functions, some critical to plant operation, depend on proper heat tracing system performance. This paper addresses several aspects of heat tracing applications that deserve routine attention to improve the systems' overall performance and maintainability.

The author has published previous papers focused on stator, rotor and bearing failures and established a methodology for the analysis of these failures. This work is the result of a taxonomic study covering his 40 year career. The purpose of this paper is to identify the various shaft failures and their causes that one could expect to find on an induction motor. Much of this work is also applicable to other types of equipment. The previous papers that have applicable material are referenced for the readers' convenience.

Loss of power and control would upset any individual or business. This paper describes the steps taken to rapidly restore a business' ability to function in the aftermath of a devastating flood, in which a pulp and paper mill had three quarters of its buildings inundated by flood waters containing chemicals, oils, silt, fungus and bacteria and debris. Submerged by these river waters were electrical centers, drives and control systems, power and steam distribution systems, paper machines, coaters, winders and other equipment. Other sites faced with similar catastrophes can apply these steps and these criteria for decision making.

This paper is a review of efforts taken toward understanding the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for AC electric motors and the benefits to be derived by using IEEE Standard 841-1994 motors. The paper describes a corporate policy to reduce TCO of AC electric motors and corporate's program for product evaluation. The paper also considers repair/replace and retrofit options. The conclusions reached could apply to all forest products industry companies as well as to most other continuous process industrial companies.

Partial discharge measurements of insulation systems is a known indicator of the initial stages of insulation breakdown. Weak, damaged or aging insulation leading to breakdown almost always exhibit partial discharge caused by a voltage stress across that weakness prior to a complete breakdown.
