The Year 2000 presents a problem for all automated systems in any business or industry. Specifically, process control systems in pulp and paper mills critical to production demands can have catastrophic failures if the Year 2000 issue is not addressed. With the vast array of manufacturers and shear number of control systems in today's automation environment, the solution methodology becomes imperative in order to effectively prevent production interruption. This paper outlines an approach to this solution methodology and offers suggestions and insights based on a plan implemented at Longview Fibre Company in Longview, WA. It also includes information about current compliance efforts and compliance status about control systems and devices specific to the Longview mill.

Selection of short-circuit protection and control for Design E motors 设计E型电机短路保护与控制的选择

The 1996 National Electrical Code (Article 430-7 (9)) introduced the Design E motor to the electrical industry. A new motor designation was necessary because the Design E motor has higher efficiency, higher locked rotor current and reduced torque requirements compared to existing NEMA motor designs. Design E motors provide increased energy savings that are important to many users, but the possible additional costs of protective and control equipment, as well as more horsepower, must be part of a cost savings calculation. The purpose of this paper is to give users of Design E motors electrical application information concerning the selection of the appropriate motor disconnecting means, motor branch-circuit short-circuit protection, motor circuit conductor, motor controller and motor overload protection, and guidance concerning torque characteristics. This paper describes how motor efficiency is increased and how the design changes related to increased efficiency affect the mechanical and electrical characteristics of motors. This paper reviews the requirements of Article 430 of the 1996 National Electrical Code and provides generic application tables that compare the protection and control requirements of Design E motors with those of Designs B, C, and D.

Energy and waste saving measures for the paper and wood products industry 造纸和木制品工业的节能和废物节约措施

The forest products industry is one of the largest energy consuming sectors of American industry. As such, it is also one of the eight "Industries of the Future" targeted by the US Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies (DOE-OIT). The Department of Energy is currently spending millions of dollars in cooperative research with forest products firms to develop new energy-efficient technology to improve the competitiveness of US Companies. In addition, DOE has developed technology transfer programs to provide assist in the dissemination of new and existing technology to these firms. These assessments contain recommendations for reducing energy use in all forms (oil, natural gas, electricity, etc.) and cover source reduction of all raw and finished products (water, sewer, paper, packaging, etc.) This paper discusses the various recommendations made during these assessments. It includes the most common energy conservation opportunities and waste minimization opportunities. Sample calculations are provided as well as documentation of resources for additional information.

The challenge for the electrical supervisor of an industrial power consumer is to keep the lights on and the costs down. This is especially difficult for companies that have numerous sites in different geographical locations. Each site needs the engineering expertise and access to operational data to ensure that its power system runs smoothly. This paper describes the synergistic benefit of a combined metering system that is distributed over a wide geographic area. The specific goals of cost control and power quality assessment are described, and the benefits that are achieved through distributed monitoring are summarized. The opportunity to take advantage of a deregulating electricity market, and how this system can be used to prepare for that market, is also described.

Minimizing electric bearing currents in adjustable speed drive systems 最大限度地减少可调速驱动系统的轴承电流

Electrical bearing currents have become of increasing interest in recent years due in part to the introduction of high speed switching technology employed in state-of-the-art adjustable speed drives (ASDs). High rates of change of ASD output voltage (dv/dt's), will cause transient currents to flow from motor windings to ground through stray capacitances. Under certain circumstances, these currents can flow through motor or gearbox/machinery bearings, and if large enough in amplitude, lead to reduced bearing life. This paper offers a view, from an industrial environment perspective, of the most common reasons that damaging electrical bearing currents can occur in an ASD-fed motor or in connected machinery, and how installation practices can affect the generation of bearing currents. Technology is discussed that facilitates easy measurements of the common mode current, which can be used to quantify the risk a particular installation may have, as well as offer measurable proof of bearing current reduction after the implementation of corrective measures. Practical suggestions are given to optimize installation practices, which if followed, can reduce or eliminate the major risks of electrical bearing damage.

Without clean power, pulp and paper equipment is subject to upsets or catastrophic failures. To cost-effectively eliminate power disturbances due to lightning, fast ringing transients and electrical noise, the use of surge protection devices at building entrance feeders, key branch panels, critical loads and communication lines is recommended. Their use improves the operating reliability of electronic equipment. The following guidelines are intended to help the engineer design reliable sources of power for paper industry equipment.

Evaluation of sympathetic nuisance tripping involving instantaneous ground fault relays and general considerations for ground fault protection of industrial power systems 涉及瞬时接地故障继电器的交感有害跳闸的评估和工业电力系统接地故障保护的一般考虑

The behavior of ground fault relays in large industrial power systems is generally perceived to be well-understood. In reality, the behavior of these relays can be influenced by more than the magnitude of 60 Hz ground fault induced short circuit currents, current transformer ratios, and relay tap settings. This paper addresses issues that can lead to sympathetic nuisance tripping of ground fault relays and other ground fault protection concerns. Sympathetic nuisance tripping occurs if a feeder with no conventional ground fault current source (generator or utility tie transformer) downstream from the feeder circuit breaker trips when a ground fault occurs elsewhere on the power system. The advantages and disadvantages of various types of ground fault sensing relay configurations are also discussed. Specific protection application considerations relating to high resistance grounding are presented.
