The article examines the confessional situation, as well as the transformation of religion and religious practices at the present stage, using the example of the Chuvash village of Kosh-Elga in the Bizhbulyak district of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Religious practices are considered in historical dynamics, starting from the last quarter of the 18th century. In addition, the influence of the parish and the church on the religion of the villagers and their ritual culture is shown: calendar and funeral and memorial rituals. The study showed that the religious situation in the village during the 18th -20th centuries developed in the direction of a gradual transition from paganism to Orthodoxy. The Chuvash settlers who settled on the Bashkir lands, although they were considered new Baptists, were actually adherents of the old, i.e., pagan religion. After the construction of the temple in the last quarter of the 19th century in the religion and religious practices of the villagers, Orthodox-pagan syncretism began to strengthen and assert itself...

MULTI-RELIGIOUS BELONGING AND CHRISTIAN IDENTITY IN THE WEST: CONTEXTS AND PERSPECTIVES 西方的多宗教归属与基督教身份:语境与视角

Double and multiple religious belonging (MRB) is one of the most popular fields of research in Religious Studies and Theology in the West. It is curious that Russia does not utilize the notion of MRB being acquainted just with the notion of double belief (Rus. dvoeverie ). The latter has almost nothing in common with double and multiple religious belonging in the Western sense of the word. So, what is MRB? Although the term does not seem to be ambiguous it does not mean a complete form of belonging to two or more religious traditions, it rather implies formal belonging to one religion and some extent of fragmentary participation in another religion or other ones. The notion of MRB is linked to the postmodern contextual interpretation of religion beyond any essentialism, which allows speaking about the hybridity of religions and religion as such, as well as about the option to relativize or broaden the notion of Christian identity. What interreligious models allow to make use of the notion of MRB and how can MRB co-exist with Christian identity in its traditional exclusivist understanding? In the protestant environment, the notion of MRB is a derivative of pluralism whereas inside Roman Catholicism it collaborates with inclusivism, which in its turn tries to restrict itself to the performative aspect of foreign religions...

The article analyzes the transcendental method applied to the axiology of Russian religious philosophy on the example of V.D. Kudryavtsev-Platonov’s works. The author offers a description of the contradiction between the transcendental method in the form in which it was implemented in Platonism and Kantianism as variants of non-Christian philosophizing, and Orthodox theism. Platonism and Kantianism tried to justify such a variant of the relationship between the transcendent and the immanent, which can be called transcendentism. In axiological terms, transcendentism represents the sphere of values as something that belongs to a special world: in Platonism, the sphere of values is identical to the sphere of ideas; in the Kantian tradition, it is placed in the consciousness of a conditional transcendental subject. Both versions of philosophizing lead to the divorce of the spiritual and material principles of the world due to their abstraction, and not concreteness. The author concludes That V...

CONTEMPORARY “SHAMANISING PERSONS” AMONG THE TUNGUS-MANCHU (EVENKI, EVEN, AND NANAI): CASE STUDIES ABOUT COMMON COLLECTIVE SPIRITUAL REPRESENTATIONS 通古斯满族(鄂温基族、鄂温族和纳奈族)的当代“萨满人”:关于共同集体精神表征的案例研究

This article studies common spiritual representations about contemporary Tungus-Manchu “shamanising persons”. It analyses ethnographic material gathered by the authors between 1994 and 2020 among the Evenki, Even, and Nanai of Yakutia, the Amur region, Kamchatka, Novorossiysk, and Khabarovskii krai, as well as the relevant scholarly literature. Under Soviet anti-religious policies, the traditional shamans of these peoples went into significant decline: the last traditional shamans passed away in the 2010s, thus potentially disrupting the transmission of the shamanic function. Nevertheless, according to collective representations, the spirits are still active and continue elect people to become shamans. Our paper argues that these peoples are enduring “ritual wanderings”, wedged between a lack of individuals able to transmit the knowledge required to become a traditional shaman and the fact they reject urban/western neo-shamanism (in contrast to other Siberian peoples like the Buriat, Tuva, Yakut, and Altai). Through the analysis of a mosaic of case studies on shamanising persons who are neither traditional shamans nor neo-shamans, we reveal many relationships with the spirits, the ways these people deal with shamanic election, and the common core of the spiritual representations of the Tungus-Manchu. This paper contributes to the study of contemporary shamanism, Tungus-Manchu cultures, and human-nature relationships.

The development of contemporary societies is in many ways associated with ethnoreligious processes, modifications of religious consciousness, behavior, and religious identity. Their studying, besides theoretical approaches, will require a systematically arranged empirical knowledge. The article analytically presents dynamical analysis of religious processes in Armenia based upon three wide-scale periodic ethnosociological studies with gaps of 12 years. The said ethnosociological studies were held among Armenia’s urban population using the methods of standard interview involving 4000, 2000 and 2000 people in 1980, 1993 and 2005 respectively. Beside other clusters of problems, the research program included subjects associated with a changing character of religious consciousness and behavior of diverse socio-demographic groups of people dwelling in five cities of the Republic. Responses showing respondents’ attitudes to religion, the pretext for attending church, attitudes to the religious and ritual practices were chosen as indicators - all within the context of diverse facets of public relations...

The article studies a prayer as a special form of interpersonal religious communication, the distinctive feature of which is the involvement of representatives of different worlds in the communicative process: the sacred and the profane. The philological analysis focuses on the Old Testament prayers - the blessings of God addressed to the first people Adam and Eve, as well as to the Old Testament saints Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The study shows that the texts belong to the genre of prayer, as we have the relevant structural-semantic and functional features that identify it as text in this genre (the presence of the addresser and the addressee, the communicative goal; particular situation of communication; mechanism of text formation, etc.). The prayer of blessing is a form of expression of the specific victim, an example of which is the perfect love of God that caused the creation of the Universe and return the feeling of a man. Analyzing the biblical material, the author of the article comes to the following conclusions: 1) the divine word, the blessing is a manifestation of perfect love, through which covered not only the process of creation, but the creation itself; 2) appellative text directs the addressee to commit post-communistic action, which is directly connected with the implementation of the divine will, a manifestation of humility - certificate of perfect love on the part of the person; 3) the instrument of text formation prayers-blessings mechanism is deployed variable repetition; 4) the Old Testament model of prayer becomes a model of the textual organization of spiritual communication between God and man, man and God...

The philological analysis focuses on the Old Testament prayers - the blessings of God addressed to the first people Adam and Eve, as well as to the Old Testament saints Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The study shows that the texts belong to the genre of prayer, as we have the relevant structural-semantic and functional features that identify it as text in this genre (the presence of the addresser and the addressee, the communicative goal; particular situation of communication; mechanism of text formation, etc.). The prayer of blessing is a form of expression of the specific victim, an example of which is the perfect love of God that caused the creation of the Universe and return the feeling of a man. The article deals with the analysis of anthropological concepts of one of the main schools of religious Taoism - Quanzhen / Longmen - in the aspect of identifying and considering the Buddhist elements of late Taoist anthropology. The main source for the analysis was the text of the 17th century Lun men xin fa (“The Law of the Heart-Consciousness [according to the Tradition] Longmen”), which outlined the views of Wang Changyue, master of the Taoist school Quanzhen / Longmen. The article examines the Buddhist elements of the late Taoist somatology and psychology: the concept of the heart-consciousness ( xin ), the concept of “vitality of wisdom” ( hui ming ), the doctrine of the “true spirit” ( zhen ling , yuan shen ). The central concept of the text - heart-consciousness - is interpreted by Wang Changyue to a large extent in a Buddhist way. Such concepts as the material body ( se shen ) and the Body of the Law ( fa shen ) are discussed in the text in the spirit of late Buddhist Mahayana psychology...

GENESIS AND MAIN TRENDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BUDDHISM IN THE BOHAI STATE 渤海国佛教发展的起源及主要趋势

The genesis and initial development of Bohai Buddhism is due to several factors. Firstly, the beginning of Buddhism in the Bohai State was laid by the penetration and influence of the Buddhist culture of the Sui and Tang dynasties; the carriers of this trend could be the Mohe from Yingzhou, who were part of the conglomerate of the creators of the state. Secondly, the integration of Goguryeo Buddhism and its followers who inhabited the Tumen River basin played a significant role. Later, the Buddhist culture of the Tang Dynasty exerted an ever-increasing influence on the development of Bohai Buddhism. With the development of the political system, cities and transport links in the Bohai State, Buddhism gradually became the dominant religious ideology in worldview and culture. Bohai Buddhism received its vivid expression in the construction of temples and pagodas. The architecture and decoration of Bohai's Buddhist temples and pagodas reflected their strong resemblance to the Buddhist culture of the Tang Dynasty. After the defeat of the Bohai State by the Khitan and the creation of the Liao Empire, Bohai Buddhism did not quickly disappear, its remains can be traced in the culture of the Bohai people that survived after the fall of the state, especially in the beliefs of the Bohai aristocracy.

The article analyzes the role of censorship in the Russian Empire as a tool for controlling the printed publications of the Muslims of Siberia in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. The source base of the study was archival materials of the Russian State Historical Archive, the State Archive of the Altai Territory and the State Archive of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and, as well as regulatory legal acts regulating the process of publishing printed materials in the Russian Empire. Based on the sources under consideration, it is concluded that at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries, the number of Muslim printed publications in the territory of the Russian Empire increased. The Muslim population of the country is beginning to worry about issues related to the life of the Russian Ummah in the regions, as well as the participation of Muslims in the political life of the country. The activity of Muslims in the field of publishing, as well as events in the country at the beginning of the 20th century (the First Russian Revolution, the First World War) led to increased state censorship of printed materials...

The essay focuses on the life and works of one of the most famous Chinese researchers of Orthodoxy after 1949, the translator and historian Yue Feng (September 1928 - February 22, 2017). His “A History of the Orthodox Church” was the first authoritative study of the history of the Orthodox Church, published in China since the beginning of the “reform and openness” period (Gǎigé kāifàng; 1978 - present days). The article focuses on Yue Feng’s understanding of the history of the Orthodox Church and the features of the doctrine inherent in Orthodoxy which he chose to highlight. The relevance of the research is determined by the fact that to this day there is a significant interest in the study of Orthodoxy in China itself: new research articles are published, dissertations are defended. Unfortunately, even today Yue Feng’s works, widely known in the Chinese-speaking academia, are known only to a small group of sinologists and students of the history of Orthodoxy in China in the Russian academic community...
