In spring 2023, the Gdansk publishers: słowo/obraz terytoria released the first volume of Krzysztof Pomian’sstudy Muzeum. Historia światowa [World History of theMuseum]. It launches the Polish edition of the monumentalthree-volume work published by Éditions Gallimard in Pariswhich is the first study of the universal history of the museum. This is more than a book, it’s a monument! (Plus qu’un livre,un monument!) is what Fabien Simode wrote in the l’OEilmonthly (March 2021). At present rarely are such historicallybroad studies released, possibly because of authors’ fear ofbeing potentially accused of postmodernist meta-narrative.In this case, the work is a comprehensive synthesis in view ofthe entailed chronology, geography, and thematic range. Thediscussed volume Od skarbca do muzeum [From a TreasureChamber to the Museum] recently published for Polish readerstackles the process of European collectorship crystalizingand first museums being its consequence, mainly Italian andseveral northern ones, from the Capitoline Museum in Rome(1471) up to London’s British Museum (1753). Subsequentvolumes are already being prepared. Titled L’ancrage européen,1789–1850, the second one is dedicated to the historyof the museum consolidating into a permanent and significantelement of European culture, close to the institution weknow today: started by the revolutionary Louvre (1793), thishistory is created by the vast part of the major museums oftoday’s Western Europe. Finally, volume three A la conquêtedu monde, 1850–2020 is the most extensive of them all bothchronologically and territorially, as well as in view of the numberof museums and their activity discussed. Author’s considerationsencompass museums’ expansion to Eastern Europeincluding Russia, and then eventually to the rest of the world:Asia, Africa, both Americas, mainly the territories connectedwith the West through colonial bonds; the United States, beingthe area where today’s dominating world centres havebeen formed, is analysed separately. At that point the book’stitle: world history, gains its full relevance, and relates both tothe interwar period in the democratic and totalitarian world,WW II, and to the long contemporary era.
Historia światowa[博物馆的世界历史]。

The first sectionsof the study tackle the legal status of museums and theimpact of subsequent regulations of public law on the contractsconcluded by museums, beginning with the basic act, namely the Act on Museums. Subsequently, the Author proceedsto analysing the Act of 11 September 2019 on PublicProcurement Law as well as fiscal regulations in the contextof such contracts. In the following chapters, the applicationof the provisions of the Act on the Security of Personal Dataand regulations concerning the disclosure of contracts by themuseums which are public sector units are discussed. A valuablecomplement to the study can be found in a set of contracttemplates contained in an Annex; they actually translate intothe summing up of the conclusions presented in the study andalso resulting from the study Contracts in Museum Operations. Iwona Gredka-Ligarska, and Prof. Wojciech W. KowalskiUmowy w działalności muzeów.

NFT gained widespread popularity in 2021, andworld museums are the ones that have taken an interestin it. It was due to the financial problems caused by theCOVID-19 pandemic. Creating an NFT of the museumsartwork and its sale is to be one of the solutions. In thispaper, the Author analyses challenges and opportunitiesregarding the creation and sale of NFTs by museums inthe eyes of Article 9 of the Act on Museums. This artilesemphasizes selected opportunities and challenges, suchas the instability of the value of cryptocurrency, viewersinterest in NFTs, the correlation between the ownership ofan NFT and the museums artwork, and, last but not least, the equipment and staffing requirements. Before makingthe final decision, museums would have to face them. Thepenultimate part of the paper includes Polish museumprofessionals opinions on this topic.

The importance of provenance research forplacing objects of originally unknown origins within a widerhistorical context is discussed. The issue is tackled on theexample of a less known group of historic objects at theJagiellonian University Museum: several dozens fragmentsof textiles from Egypt dating from Late Antiquity.

The Museum of the Sandomierz Region wasone of the more thriving tourism-and-sightseeing-relatedinstitutions of the Second Polish Republic. The papers aimis to show the history of its establishment and developmentin the first years of its operation, previously in literatureshown only in very general terms, without resorting to allthe sources. The first historic piece: an urn excavated closeto Linw was donated for the collection by AleksanderPatkowski nicknamed father of Polish regionalism. An attempt is made to reconstruct the foundation ofthe Museums first collection. Table 1 shows the dynamicsof the acquisitions in subsequent years. Apart from singledonations, Museums heritage pieces came from amateurexcavations or individual donors, and with time artefacts wereprovided mainly by professional archaeological research. Theartefacts were considered worthy of display, that is why, in1921, the Museum was opened in a provisional facility. In 1923,a catalogue of the archaeological collection was published. The Museum proved to be successful logistically and interms of tourism and regionalism, this demonstrated by theturnout in the first years of its operation shown in Table 2. Theproblem of the lack of Museums permanent seat was solvedthrough acquiring a plot of land and having its own premisesraised. The story of the opening of the seat of the branch ofthe Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society, PTK, and of theMuseum of the Sandomierz Region in 1925 is presented inthe paper. It was the first in Poland building owned by PTK,and the Museum took up much of its space. The processof organizing the institution climaxed with a permanentexhibition having been opened to the public. The Museumof the Sandomierz Region was the fourteenth institution ofthe type run by PTK after 1918. In the 1930s, it turned intoan icon of Polish tourism-and-sightseeing-related museology, while the presented reconstruction of its beginning revealsnumerous facts from the history of the activity of Polishsociety in the independent state.

Between March and August 2022, the NationalMuseum in Lublin mounted the first in Poland exhibition ofthe Polish painter Tamara Lempicka. The number of publicwho visited it reached 86,667, which made it an event of thehighest turn-out in Poland. An attempt to analyse the wonder of Lempickas communicationsuccess, the unwavering interest in her personalityand art, has been made by the Author. This effortwas helped through reaching the current carriers of herbrand, namely contemporary fashion designers, authorsof adverts, films, or literature pieces. The Author analysedthe results of the research conducted during the Exhibition, amounting to 1,544 surveys in total. The studys purposewas to verify publics satisfaction, locations visitors hadcome from, source of information on the Exhibition, efficiencyof the Museums communication endeavours, and the publics profile. The visitors considered thefollowing to have been the Exhibitions strongest points(by order of preference); exhibits, topic, layout, narrative, curators concept, and the design. Interestingly, when theExhibition was open to the public and the advertising andinforming campaign was being implemented, the administratorsof social media observed a significant increase inthe number of visitors, The Facebook profile witnessed theincrease by 54.8 per cent versus the previous five months, while the Instagram accounts visits grew by as many as202.6 per cent.Furthermore, also the campaign promoting the eventwas analysed; it was not limited either to the Internet orexternal advertising, but was also conducted at the venuewhere the Exhibition was held. The power of socialmedia was efficiently used and consciously managed by theExhibition organizers, which substantially contributed to popularizingthe project.
