Oxazalone and thiohydantoin derivatives were synthesized and their physicochemical properties are determined by absorption, fluorescence, fluorescence excitation and HNMR spectroscopies. The polymerization was carried out in DMF with AIBN as initiator. The products of polymerization were characterized by HNMR. The third order nonlinear optical properties of oxazolone and thiohydantoin containing compounds have been investigated in solutions using degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) method at 532 nm.

Scalability of packet switched cross-connects that utilize all-optical signal processing is a crucial issue that eventually determines the future role of photonic signal processing in optical networks. After reviewing several labeling techniques, we discuss in this talk label stacking techniques and its benefits for scalable optical burst and packet switched nodes. All-optical signal processing techniques enabling label stacked processing and all-optical devices for ultrafast packet switching will be also presented.

On basis of numerical simulation we study the peculiarities of the formation of ultrashort pulses, their interaction, the formation of stable multiple soliton structures in passive mode-locked fiber lasers with anomalous frequency dispersion. It is found the novel type of a dissipative soliton. The single soliton of this type has asymmetric spatial and spectral profiles and demonstrates bistability: two stable states with right and left spectral-spatial asymmetries for which the single soliton velocities are different.

In this work we propose a photoluminescence (PL) study of a GaAs/GalnAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) sandwiched between two GaAs0.95N0.05 layers grown on GaAs substrate by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). This structure is used as an optical switch in the telecommunication application. The effect of the GaAs barrier thickness (d) between the GaAs/GalnAs/GaAs QW and GaAsN plan was investigated for three samples with d = 25, 40 and 100 Adeg. We have found that at low temperature the PL spectra are essentially composed of a wide band and two sharp structures. We have attributed the wide band to the deep localized state due to the three-dimensional mode growth of the GaAsN layer at low temperature, and the two sharp structures to the fundamental states of GalnAs QW and GaAsN layers. The dependence of the energy shift with the GaAs barrier width of the two structures is explained in the frame of the coupling of the two states by the covering of their wave functions.

The utilization of unipolar optical two-dimensional codes(2D codes) employed in OCDMA systems has given a better system performance and a diminution of multiple access interferences (MAI) relative to optical unipolar codes with one dimension(lD code). In this paper we study the error probability of 2D optical codes namely prime hop system and hybrid codes using a probability distribution approach. We demonstrate in this work that we have a higher performance when we use serials eliminations interferences receiver versus conventional receiver, in other words the error probability is decrease and the system provide an important number of simultaneous users sharing the network.

Previously the author's (Lopez-Bravo et al., 2007) proposed the Load Balanced WASPNET Scheduler (LBWS), a novel scheduling approach for WASPNET optical packet switching (OPS) nodes. Unlike the original WASPNET description, LBWS is fully distributed and its computational cost is independent from switch size. Since it predicts packet delays at packet ingress based on a deterministic evolution of the switch configuration, it is not necessary to emulate RAM memories. However, LBWS does not maintain the packet sequence. In this paper we present the LBWS algorithm with packet ordering (OLBWS), the first step to prevent mis-sequencing in a LBWS scheduler. We show that despite the algorithm simplicity a reasonable throughput can be achieved.

High gain, wide bandwidth, low noise, and low-power transimpedance amplifiers based on new BiCMOS common-base topologies have been designed for fiber-optic receivers. In particular a design approach, hereafter called "a more-FET approach", added a new dimension to effectively optimize performance tradeoffs inherent in such circuits. Using conventional silicon 0.8 mum process parameters, simulated performance features of a total-FET transimpedance amplifier operating at 7.2 GHz, which is close to the technology fT of 12 GHz, are presented. The results are superior to those of similar recent designs and comparable to IC designs using GaAs technology. A detailed analysis of the design architecture, including a discussion on the effects of moving toward more FET-based designs is presented.

Photovoltaic electricity is considered as an alternative to the actual ways of producing electricity for its different advantages. Its friendly impact on the environment and projected low cost makes it an attractive substitute. The plastic photovoltaic technology has been developing in recent years with a need to improve yield efficiency to end-up taking an important place in the world market. Different plastic photovoltaic solar cells have been fabricated recently using a variety of designs including small molecules, polymers or hybrid (organic /inorganic) materials. Record photovoltaic conversion efficiency was reported for interpenetrated based on the P3HT: PCBM system with 4~5% yield. The PCBM molecule presents some drawbacks such as low visible absorption, relatively high cost and multi-step synthesis. Due to the above, some new synthetic approaches around the fullerene C60 unit were proposed. In this study, we investigate the photovoltaic properties of different fullerene C60 derivatives blended into poly(3-hexylthiophene). An attempt to explain our photovoltaic characteristics in correlation with FTIR, fluorescence and UV/Vis absorption spectra was carried out. A study of the morphology was also achieved.

We report about a novel kind of supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fibre in which the spectral broadening occurs only on the blue side of the pump wavelength. Along with experimental data we present a theoretical explanation for the observed phenomena which is supported by the results of a set of numerical simulations.
