Abstract The purpose of this article is to review the known biopsychosocial risks of participation in eSports. The authors used The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to systematically review the existing literature on risks to well-being for amateur and professional eSports players. Risks are conceptualized and categorized with the biopsychosocial model. Our literature review surfaced several biopsychosocial risk factors associated with eSports. Some of these risks included poor nutrition, caffeine supplementation, physiological arousal, injury, pain, stress, maladaptive coping, cognitive fatigue, gaming addiction, mental ill-health, harassment, and racism. We found little support for eSports players being at risk due to sedentary behavior or an increased body mass index. These results are expected to inform support staff members and industry professionals.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop measurement scale of event quality in spectator sports - single-item measures (SEQSS-SIM). The reliability and validity of single item measures developed in the current study were tested using the responses from 220 spectators of a Major League Baseball game. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted along with structural equation modeling. The results indicate that single item measures fairly represent 11 key aspects of sport events. Although scholars addressed the usefulness and necessity of single item measures, this approach has not been explored in the sport event context. Therefore, the current study will contribute methodologically to the measurement of event quality by offering a parsimonious and psychometrically sound scale to measure spectators’ perceived sport event quality. Event managers can use the single-item measures as a convenient diagnostic tool to evaluate spectators’ quality perceptions in an efficient and effective manner.

Abstract Despite the popularity of throwback apparel, few extant studies have investigated factors that differentially affect throwback and current apparel preferences. In this study, we suggest that the negative effects of poor team performance are especially relevant to low power distance belief fans and that throwback apparel is more resilient to these negative effects due to its nostalgic nature. Thus, the current study investigated the interplay between sport team ranking and power distance belief in shaping NBA fans’ preferences for current and throwback apparel. This study utilized a moderated moderation analysis of team ranking, product type (throwback vs. current team apparel), and power distance belief on purchase intentions. Data was collected from 401 NBA fans via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Findings suggest that, first, team ranking significantly influenced fans’ purchase intentions in general (i.e. both throwback and current apparel). Second, there was a significant interaction effect between team ranking and product type such that lower team rankings negatively influenced only current apparel and not throwback apparel. Third, high power distance belief was positively associated with purchase intentions of both throwback and current apparel. Finally, the three-way interaction effect was significant. Specifically, the two-way interaction between team ranking and product type was found to be significant only for low power distance belief fans and not high power distance belief fans.
