The NEMA Magnet Wire Packaging Committee's activity is summarized. MW-755, Straight Flange Magnet Wire Plastic Spools/Reels, has been adopted and MW-760 Tapered Flange Magnet Wire Plastic Spools/Reels is in final draft. These specifications are an attempt to unify the spools/reels used by the magnet wire industry and provide data useful in manufacturing operations of both the magnet wire producers and the magnet wire users. The work being done on a standard for reclaimed plastic spools/reels is also outlined. This standard is important from both an environmental and a safety standpoint.<>

Power capacitors 电力电容器

The historical development of dielectric materials for high-voltage power capacitors is reviewed. Solid dielectrics have evolved from cellulose paper to synthetic polymers. Dielectric liquids have also undergone major changes over the years. The need to find alternatives to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the mid-1970's led to advances in the fundamental understanding and synthesis of fluids with improved characteristics. Manufacturers continue to offer reliable power capacitors at low cost through their efforts to carefully assemble properly matched dielectric materials in near-particle-free environments. Current technologies are presented, along with a discussion of future directions.<>

Problem solving associated with the manufacture and application of magnet wire, using microscopic analysis, is discussed in depth. Techniques such as simple stereoscopic magnification (to locate microscopic winding damage), polarized light (for fiber identification and stress analysis), and cross-sectional image analysis are shown in case study form.<>

The marketing of technology-based products is addressed. It is shown that there is a great need for the US to improve its international marketing methods if for no other reason than to help the significant trade imbalance. In order to successfully market high-tech US products around the world, many techniques have been used, including joint ventures with compatible overseas manufacturers, establishing marketing organizations in fertile overseas areas, enlisting the aid of overseas agents and distributors, and creating overseas manufacturing entities for world-class products. The sale of US technology has been accomplished primarily by licensing.<>

Several polymers have been synthesized that have the ability to conduct electricity. Several companies and universities are actively investigating these polymers to develop industrially useful products. The authors give an overview of the work performed on conducting polymers and discuss the possible applications of such materials. Attention is given to applications of these materials in such areas as electric power equipment, microelectronics, batteries, and microtools.<>

The author presents vital strategies for business managers for the 90s and suggests initial directions for implementing them. These strategies are deemed vital because failure to promptly and properly address the related issues will prevent the business unit from surviving the decade. The strategies are initially grouped as external and internal for purposes of discussion. The external elements are markets, customers, regulations, technology, competition, product liabilities, capital, and networking. The internal strategies are discussed with reference to vision, continual improvement, business improvement ideas, concurrent engineering, employees, future systems, flexibility, cost, preferred employer, employee benefits, business planning, and forecasting. It is concluded that it is imperative that the business unit or organization effectively implements its action plans for all the strategies.<>
