Transmitter-based equalization is investigated for enhanced performance in 10 Gb/s multimode- fiber links. Rigorous simulations and proof-of-principle experiments over 500 m of FDDI-grade fiber confirm for the first time the potential superiority of the technique relative to receiver-based schemes.

Goals Our aim is to make the most cost-effective link. Assuming distance, connectivity, etc. are given, we need to choose the characteristics that deliver the bits with an acceptable biterror-rate (BER) for the least overall cost incurred over the lifetime of the equipment. My goal is to show how we can use ever-cheaper processing power to save on the expensive stuff. My examples are mostly from single-mode fiber, because that’s where my experience lies.

CW lasing of Bi-doped fiber lasers in a wavelength range of 1150-1215 ran with output power up to 15W has been obtained for the first time. The unsaturable optical losses in Bi-doped fibers have been revealed.

We demonstrate the translation of Gbps channel from the conventional fiber communication band to the visible band. Signal channel is converted over 1000 nm using four-photon process in photonic crystal fiber. An error-free received performance was measured in the target visible band.

We present a new class of multi-channel Fiber Bragg grating, which provides the characteristics of channelized dispersion but does so with only a single reflection band. Such gratings can provide pure phase control of optical pulses without introducing any deleterious insertion-loss-variation.
