This article addresses the gaps in scholarship on the implications of the “failure” of knowledge in Sor Juana’s First Dream by analyzing the performative representation of failure as a solution to ambitious desire. The endless failures eventually exhaust the shame of failing to achieve absolute knowledge by comparing her use of Phaeton’s myth to Teresa of Avila’s humility. The refiguration of failure problematizes the distinction between the secular and religious realms of knowledge in contemporary academic discourses about Sor Juana’s aesthetic impulses.

This article explores Garcilaso de la Vega’s “Epístola a Boscán” in connection to a broad conception of the letter during Spanish early modern literature. By analyzing this poem in consonance with letter-writing manuals, letter-collections, and its critical reception during the period, one can draw the conclusion that these types of poems follow similar patterns and tendencies.

This study demonstrates the complex relationships between institutional religion and local, popular devotion in Quevedo’s poem “Ya la obscura y negra noche.” Through the application of the figure of Wisdom to Mary, Quevedo uses knowledge of liturgy and Scripture to dignify the local advocation of the church of Santa María de la Antigua in Valladolid. It also explores how this figure’s address to the local cofrades and encouragement of confraternal celebration uses orthodox scriptural interpretation to privilege popular devotion over institutional religion.

This article deals with the channels of humorousness in a little-known ballad by Antonio de Zamora about The Escurial. It explores some of the implications of the category of the “jocoserio” within the panorama of Golden Age laughter. Next, it analyzes the structure and elocution of the composition, paying particular attention to the mixture of the burlesque register with the encomiastic purpose.

From the seventeenth and throughout the eighteenth century, some French and Italian authors characterized Spanish poetry by its baroque features. In the nineteenth century, foreign Romanticism tended to represent it as an eastern literature. This article will try to contextualize these characterizations, while proposing the study of travel accounts to Spain between 1770 and 1808 as a historiographical genre where the confluence of both paradigms, the neoclassical and the Romantic, is noted with both coinciding in representing Spanish literature as diverging from the classical tradition.
