Lope de Vega and the Epístolas of Amarilis and Belardo: Poetic Authority and Transatlantic Dialogue
Pub Date : 2024-05-01 DOI: 10.5325/caliope.29.1.0017
Mark J. Mascia
An example of epistolary discourse in seventeenth-century Spain that merits further examination is the correspondence between Lope de Vega (writing under the assumed name of “Belardo”) and a presumed poet from Latin America known only as “Amarilis.” This study moves beyond the focus of most criticism, which attempts to arrive at an identity for this Amarilis. It proves how transatlantic epistolary dialogue can be egalitarian as much as esthetically meaningful, as both authors demonstrate poetic authority.

In the sixteenth century, four Petrarch vitae appear in separate editions of the poet, as a preliminary accessus. These are added to a previous manuscript, a translation of an exempt biography from the mid-fifteenth century. With their variants, the five texts make up a “Petrarch paradigm” that serves as an authorial image model for Hispanic followers of the Canzoniere. Thirteen years after the last of these biographies, that of Salusque Lusitano, Herrera composed Garcilaso’s life to open his edition. The comparative study of the resulting images illuminates one of the vectors of change proposed by the Sevillian in the introduction of a cultist poetic whose previous step is the decentering operation of the Garcilasian model.

Pub Date : 2023-04-01 DOI: 10.5325/caliope.28.1.0078
Simón Andrés Villegas
This article offers a reinterpretation of Quevedo’s sonnet “Miré los muros de la patria mía” based on the analysis of the textual mechanisms used by the poet to configure a unique poetic space. Starting off from one of the most recent works on this poem, which proposes its interpretation as an example of the poetry of ruins, I will try to demonstrate that Quevedo’s sonnet could be read as well within an interpretive framework that privileges the poem’s phenomenological aspects. From this perspective, “Miré los muros de la patria mía” makes a distinctive poetic proposal: an itinerant and spatial experience which ultimately looks for the reader’s involvement.

This article examines the influence of Sallust and Lucretius on the ideological postulates of Herrera’s Anotaciones, set out in the prologue to the reader written by Francisco de Medina. The article highlights the rhetorical and intertextual strategies deployed by the Sevillian humanist to prop up the role of Herrera at the top of a Republic of Letters of global reach at the end of the sixteenth century, while shedding light on how his canonization contributes to the construction of the collective imaginary around the translatio imperii et studii in Philip II’s Spain.
