La Biblioteca Diocesana di Aosta conserva un fondo di circa 150 incunaboli, oggetto di un lavoro di inventariazione risalente alla meta del secolo scorso. Il fondo e stato recentemente riesaminato e la descrizione degli esemplari e ora disponibile nel database internazionale Material Evidence in Incunabula (MEI). Oltre all’identificazione di diversi possessori, e quindi al contributo offerto alla ricostruzione della storia della circolazione del libro in ambito valdostano, la ricerca ha permesso di portare alla luce un’edizione cinquecentesca finora sconosciuta, della quale il contributo fornisce un’analisi bibliografica e una proposta di attribuzione al tipografo Johann Besicken. La circostanza e inoltre occasione per fornire alcune precisazioni bibliografiche su un’edizione quattrocentesca del De consolatione philosophiae del tipografo lionese Guillaume Le Roy.

Il De scriptis et bibliothecis antediluvianis di Joachim Johann Mader apparve nel 1666 come praefatio del De bibliothecis atque archivis virorum clarissimorum libelli , la prima antologia di trattati sulla storia delle biblioteche. Nel suo saggio, l’erudito ricostruisce compiutamente la storia della scoperta dell’alfabeto, della scrittura e dei primi libri, cosi da completare la sua antologia con le notizie che mancavano negli altri elaborati e da fornire una cornice concettuale alla raccolta.

The genetic code of the human species requires us to react aggressively to threatening situations. Culture, history – as magistra vitae –, philosophy, law and even religion have failed to quell aggressive instincts except through threats and punishments. Until today, scientific achievements have not changed the biological determinants of our species, so as to eliminate its aggressive and destructive components. The recent electronic communication system, which allows not only the exchange of information but also the immediate transmission of emotional and empathic states, can have unpredictable and incisive effects on the collective transformation of human beings.

Libraries always have been evidence of civilization, culture, tradition, and progress. However, from the Enlightenment period and especially after the French Revolution, libraries become a factor of not only individual, but also collective and social education and elevation. In 1837, Louis Aime Martin – conservator of the library of Saint Genevieve in Paris – published the essay Plan d’une bibliotheque universelle, where the library is described as a national educational enterprise whose aim is to bring together within the sameprinciples all classes of society. The essay cites the works of the most notable authors of all disciplines, divided by nations for the literary sphere.
