Background: Problem based learning (PBL) is a self-directed method that help learner to develop critical thinking, problem solving skills and enhance their aptitude. The objective of the study was to measure the effectiveness of workshop in changing the faculties’ knowledge, skills, and attitude on PBL. Methods: A descriptive design with pre-test and post-test was used to examine the objectives of the study. A self-report questionnaire was used to collect data from a convenience sample of 23 health professions faculties from various institutions of Institute of Medicine (IOM), Tribhuvan University (TU), affiliated institutions and others of Nepal who attended the workshop. Faculty's feedback on PBL was collected before and after workshop using Likert Scale's 4 and 5 point. Results: The findings of the study were highly significant increment of mean score of post-test compared to pre-test within the group of “can do it confidently” (p≤0.001). Similarly, Majority of participants scored “strongly agreed” in ten statement of feedback on the effectiveness of the PBL after workshop. Conclusion: This PBL workshop training was highly effective to change the faculties' knowledge, skills and attitude towards the integration of PBL in their classes. This training may help to move from traditional way of thinking to PBL for future implementation.

Ayurveda, the science of knowledge, is a holistic system of medicine and beholds various unique concepts. Janapadhdwamsa is one of them. In ayurvedic text clear explaination about janapadhdwamsa, its causes, features and treatment can be observed. These concepts hold good till date and the concept is similar to the concept of epidemic in contemporary science. Janapadhdwamsa (janapada+ udhdwamsa) literally meaning destruction of the group of people at a time is caused mainly by pragyaparadha (intellectual blasphemy) caused by adharma(immorality) leading to the vitiation of the four common cause of janapadhdwamsa ie vayu, udaka, desha and kaala. These vikrita bhava (feature) have distinct features. Similarly, an epidemic is the rapid spread of disease to a large number of people in a given population within a short period of time. For the treatment of janapadhdwamsa rasayana sevana, panchakarma, sadvritta palana, use of drugs previously collected should be used. Similar concepts are also indicated in the contemporary science. This paper will focus on the concept of janapadhdwamsa in various ayurvedic text, its cause and management with reference to epidemic. Keywords: janapadhdwamsa, epidemic, janapadhdwamsakara bhavas

The role of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress in bringing about a negative impact on health and providing an open invitation to a plethora of diseases is a well-known fact. This has led to the search of antioxidants. The number of conventional available antioxidants have certain limitations and researchers are constantly in search of herbs and medicinal plants. Amla possesses a wide range of medicinal values used ardently by our seers for the treatment of the diseased and to maintain the health of the healthy people as well. Researches have thrown light upon the fact that Amla possess anti-oxidative features and has a wide range of therapeutic utilities. The antioxidant property of Amla has been even experimented to offer a readily available alternative in certain cases as well. The scattered information pertaining to the antioxidant potential of Amla is reported. Present review embraces the general introduction, morphology, phytochemical and pharmacological attributes and an in-depth information of reported antioxidant properties of Amla in terms of available experimental and clinical studies.

Discovery of solution to a problem by systematic and scientific search of data on a particular topic is research. ‘Health researchis an impotant  requirement that state should not disregard’. Medical research is one of the main pillars of todays medical science which can transform evidence based clinical practice. Wide range public must take hold of the principles of the scientific method to know the worth and boundaries of clinical research, though they could not conduct health research by themselves. This review article aims to focus on fundamental concepts of research methodologies.

However, documentation on status of traditional healers (THs) in Nepal is scanty. The purpose of this study was to analyze the status on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, skill, practices and technology of THs in Morang, Nuwakot, Myagdi, Surkhet and Kanchanpur districts of Nepal. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the districts from February to May 2014. Total of 105 THs were interviewed using semi-structured questionnaires. Data were summarized using frequency, percentages and tables. Responses on following topics were obtained: socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, skill, practices and technology. Results: In general, 73.9% of respondents were males with only 26.09% females. The greater proportion of (43.20%) THs were senior citizens above 46 years. Majorities (56.48%) of THs have been to primary school and were Hindu. Majority of THs (29.50%) were acquired the knowledge from traditional practitioners. Other sources of acquiring knowledge were family based apprenticeship, trainings and supernatural. History taking was used by 60.30% of THs for diagnosis of illness. Over forty five percent of THs had been practicing from 1-3 decades. THs (6.21%) of Morang and Surkhet consulted over 1000 clients per month. Most of THs (40.02%) used medicinal herbs as the means of healing. A total of 20% THs agreed referring complicated and unsuccessful clients to health institutions. THs used traditional tools and techniques to diagnose diseases. THs prescribed medicines prepared from medicinal herbs or in combination with minerals and animal byproducts. Conclusion: THs have acquired traditional medical knowledge, skill, practices and technology from their ancestors, colleagues, self-study, traditional teachers, training etc. THs use many traditional tools and techniques to diagnose diseases and treat clients by medicinal herbs. THs are the main source of primary health care providers for rural peoples.
