The humid tropics harbor great biological diversity, in addition to native species with forage potential as alternatives for animal feed. However, using trees and shrubs and having plantations are limited by the absence of information on their growth and seed germination. Therefore, the goal was to evaluate the germination capacity of native plant species with forage potential in tropical rainforest conditions, selecting eight species with important nutritional value: Bauhinia tarapotensis, Crescentia cujete, Zygia longifolia, Cecropia ficifolia, Piptocoma discolor, Piper bredemeyeri, Calathea lutea and Heliconia rostrata. Two treatments were evaluated: T1: Seeds (sexual and asexual) immersed for 12 hours in water, and T2: Seeds (sexual and asexual) without any pre-germination treatment (control). Significant differences were found in the germination percentage among species, treatments and the interaction of the two factors (p < 0.01). The species C. cujete, C. ficifolia and P. discolor presented better germination percentages with T1, in contrast to P. bredemeyeri, which adapted better to T2. In the same sense, H. rostrata (93%), C. cujete (91%) and Z. longifolia (89%) with T1, were the species with the highest germination capacity when compared to the other species, being desirable for use as fodder in agricultural production systems, due to their high germination power. In general, the pre-germinative treatment with water was very effective in increasing the permeability of the seed coat and, therefore, favored the breaking of endogenous physiological dormancy.

Although chemical insecticides are successfully used in agriculture, several problems may be related to their indiscriminate use. This has encouraged the development of alternative methods for pest insect control and societal pressure for pesticide-free products. The jatropha (J. curcas) and castor bean (Ricinus communis) are plants that have shown insecticidal potential. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the effects of leaves of R. communis and J. curcas of different ages on the cabbage aphid (Myzus persicae). Five solution concentrations and five leaf types were used. Each treatment consisted of ten individuals M. persicae, kept in Petri dishes (10.0 x 1.2 cm), about kale leaf discs. Each Petri dish was considered a repeat, totaling ten. An airbrush connected to a compressor calibrated at constant pressure and 5 mL of solution per repetition was used for direct application. The cabbage discs were immersed in the different treatments for five seconds and offered to aphids in the indirect application. For both tests, evaluations were performed 72 hours after application. Data were submitted to linear regression analysis and means test. There was an interaction between the application type, leaf type, and concentrations for both plants. We argue that at their different ages, jatropha and castor bean leaves have insecticidal potential in the management of M. persicae.

This review article examines the legal support and proper state support of organic production in Ukraine, substantiation of the potential and obstacles to the development of organic production, as well as proposals for improving the current legislation. This review also analyzes the modern market of organic products, which, in terms of growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly and safe for human health, is very perspective for Ukraine. The increase in the area of agricultural land allocated for organic production, the number of domestic organic operators, and the ever-increasing volume of exports of organic products to other countries indicate a steady trend of growth and further development of this market. However, it is noted that the need to form the infrastructure of the organic products market still remains important. In addition, the problem of improving the system of standardization and certification of production, processing, storage and transportation of organic products, as well as the introduction of an effective control system over the sale of organic raw materials, are the main challenges to be solved.

This study analyzed the effect of rootstocks G.213, M.9 and Marubakaido with M.9 interstem of 30 and 20 cm (MB/M.9-30cm and MB/M.9-20cm) on postharvest quality, mineral composition and functional properties of 'Maxi Gala' apples. The evaluations was performed using fruits from a commercial orchard located in Vacaria, RS, Brazil. Fruits were stored for 135 and 147 days in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons, respectively, and analyzed one day after harvest and after cold storage (1.0±0.2 °C) followed by seven days in ambient condition. The mineral composition of fruits showed small and inconsistent differences between rootstocks. The MB/M.9-20cm provided higher total antioxidant activity and levels of total phenolic compounds in fruit peel than MB/M.9-30cm. For 2014/2015 season, soluble solids content at harvest was higher in fruits from trees with G.213 rootstock, not differing only from MB/M.9-30cm. In 2015/2016 season, G.213 and M.9 provided higher soluble solids content after storage compared to MB/M.9-30 cm and MB/M.9-20cm. G.213 rootstock anticipated fruit maturity compared to M.9 in 2014/2015 season. Other quality attributes of ‘Maxi Gala’ apples, at harvest and after cold storage, were similar between rootstocks G.213, M.9 and Maruba with M.9 interstem of 30 and 20cm.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of applying different concentrations of niacin, at different times in relation to nitrogen fertilization, on the characteristics of Urochloa brizantha. The treatments consisted of applying three concentrations of niacin (0, 100, and 200 mg L-1) and three different moments (two days before, together, and two days after nitrogen fertilization). It was found that there was variation in response, mainly concerning the moment of application of the vitamins, in which the joint and subsequent application of fertilization generally exceeded the application performed previously, and of both concentrations used (100 and 200 mg L-1), in relation to the control without vitamin application. In this way, the application of niacin at a concentration of 100 mg L-1, carried out jointly or after nitrogen fertilization, provides better conditions for developing and producing dry matter of Urochloa brizantha due to the presence of nitrogen.

This study investigates the biopesticidal effects of Elephantopus scaber Linn. extract on mortality of Spodoptera litura, Plutella xylostella, and non-target organisms and investigate the impact on S. litura protein levels and soil microbial community structure. The experiment was performed using a completely randomized design. Methanol extracts from E. scaber leaves, at concentrations of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, and 12%, were tested for bioactivity against the 2nd-instar larva of S. litura, P. xylostella, and earthworms. Mortality rates of the larvae and worms were observed. The collected data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by probit and descriptive analysis. The results showed that methanol extracts of E. scaber (12%) influenced the highest mortality rates for both S. litura (93.35%) and P. xylostella (96.65%) with LC50 and LC80 of S. litura was 1.867 and 4.763; for P. xylostella were 4.488 and 7.92, respectively. However, the application of E. scaber biopesticide also influences earthworms’ mortality rate. The 6% E. scaber extract resulted in 60% death of earthworms during a 20-days period. In addition, higher concentrations of E. scaber extracts resulted in lower molecular weights and levels of S. litura proteins. The diversity and density of the soil microbial community also decreased by 6% concentration.

The genetic variability in plant populations can be estimated through multivariate analysis, which allows to analyze the genotypes based on a set of traits to identify the traits with the greatest influence for the divergence and the correlation between them. In this sense, the objective of the present work was to estimate the genetic divergence between golden flax lines using multivariate analysis for initial plant selections. For this purpose, 73 lines, in addition to the control, were tested in a randomized complete block design, with three replications, and traits of cycle, stature, and yield were measured. Twelve groups were obtained based on the Mahalanobis distance estimate and Tocher cluster, and the technical length was the most important trait for the dissimilarity. The line of group XI was promising, with early maturation and satisfactory seed productivity. The graphic of dispersion of the canonical variables showed the most divergent lines, and the greatest divergence was observed between groups III and IV. Multivariate analysis was an important tool for the initial choice of superior golden flax.
