This article provides a history of Ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet vs. other technologies) and an overview of the High Speed LAN Technologies. It presents an evaluation of current networking trends, applications and needs. Included is an overview of 10Mb/s Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, the use of Ethernet terms and acronyms such as 10Base-T and VLAN and Gigabit Ethernet's applicability to fulfil market needs. It discusses the Gigabit Ethernet technologies and the 80/20 rule (20% of all traffic is in the backbone and 80% is local).

Selection/design of multiple access needs to consider a number of factors. TDMA and CDMA are both capable of supporting packet services e.g. GSM and 3G/UMTS. Packet access puts more concern on the speed of access (channel request and channel allocation); higher layers need to cooperate (i.e. reduce the number of layers) and considerable overhead for access is inevitable.

Examples of low power DSPs for wireless handsets are covered including TIC54, Lucent 1600 and Lucent 16000.
