This article discusses trends in VLSI technology evolution. It concentrates on challenges to VLSI scaling, including transistor scaling, interconnect scaling, leakage currents and silicon-on-insulator technology. It concludes that we still have not found a fundamental barrier to extending Moore's law and that the major challenge to scaling in the future will be power and efficiency.

JBIG is an image compression standard. It is distortionless and uses progressive encoding. SpecC methodology is demonstrated with a real example. SpecC is capable of transforming an executable specification into an RTL implementation. Basic refinement rules are established and applied to transform SpecC models. With the availability of SpecC automated tools, productivity gains of 100/spl times/ are achievable over the manual approach.

The authors discuss next generation wireless networks, covering the following topics: the evolution of the mobile network; the GRPS network architecture and protocols; the CDMA1X and HDR networks; the WCDMA network architecture and protocol stack; all-IP networks. architecture. Mobile networks are deploying infrastructure to provide a high speed data capability. As these next generation of networks are deployed a new generation of services will be deployed on cellular networks. Backbone networks are converging based on IP as a common networking layer. Thus the wireless network will simply be an extension of this new network.

The authors discuss the design of bandgap references. Firstly they define a bandgap reference as a voltage reference of which the output voltage is referred to the bandgap energy of the used semiconductor. Then they present a systematic design approach, which covers architectures, noise power and supply rejection. A design example is given.
