Outsourcing is one of the most popular business strategies in the globalisation era. Outsourcing can bring considerable benefits to organisations. However, if outsourcing decisions are not wisely made and the factors influencing the decision on outsourcing are not carefully considered, this could incur irreparable damage to organisation. This study seeks to identify and rank the factors affecting the outsourcing from the strategic perspective in the supply chain of small and medium manufacturing enterprises. In this study, after determining the factors influencing the strategic outsourcing decisions based on the literature, seven major factors were evaluated. In this approach, the estimation of the parameters using factor analysis was conducted to determine the most important sub-indices. Then, due to the multidimensional nature of the factors, the analytic hierarchy process technique was used for the weighting of the factors and the fuzzy additive ratio assessment technique was used for ranking the sub-criteria influencing the decisions of strategic outsourcing. The results showed that the quality is the most important factor and the management agent has the least importance.

Sentiments expressed through social media can reflect behavioural attributes of trust, commitment, collaboration, and information sharing between or among actors in supply chain management (SCM) relationships. These four attributes are generally considered to enhance SCM performance if each is at a high level. In this study, sentiment mining was undertaken using three different web crawler algorithms focusing on blog, forum, and Twitter sources. After classifying the mined sentiment data, scores were evaluated using a fuzzy model to address uncertainty and ambiguity. The least degree of fit of each attribute and combination of attributes was determined by industry for pharmaceuticals, software, retailing, and healthcare. Results indicate that the importance attributed to levels of interactions for the behavioural attributes necessitated in SCM relationships differs for the industries studied. However, overall, the most consequential attribute seems to be trust between the individuals involved. This work contributes to SCM research through the utilisation of techniques to focus on human attributes for decision making that may improve SCM performance; specifically for the industries studied.

In the present study, the re-engineering of procurement processes, as a crucial process in any organisation, is investigated based on the FMEA-DEA hybrid approach. Using the business process reengineering (BPR) method and holding many meetings with the industry elites, the prime challenges of procurement processes are detected. FMEA method is implemented to assess these challenges and DEA method is also utilised to prioritise them. In addition, the sub-processes of procurement process with higher levels of priority are then selected and the feasibility of using information technology in these sub-processes for tackling the identified problems is investigated. Inappropriate purchase plans, fluctuation of prices for supplied materials and prolongation of the purchase procedure are the main ranked challenges based on the proposed model. Finally, providing a suitable purchase plan, implementing a cost management system, and enhancement of documentation system are the main suggested actions to be executed for improving the procurement process.

This paper analyses a single manufacturer and multiple buyers supply chain where each buyer faces a price-sensitive demand. The manufacturer produces the item at a finite rate and ships to the buyers in multiple shipments of equal sized sub-batches. These shipments are made using third-party logistics support. The transportation cost is assumed to depend upon vehicle type and on the buyer to which shipment is made. The problem of determining right inventory policies to maximise the overall supply chain profit is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model and a meta-heuristic based on particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is also proposed. The sensitivity analyses carried out shows the impact of the change in vehicle capacities, setup cost, unit cost, production rate and holding rate of the manufacturer on inventory policy and its related costs. The sensitivity analysis will provide a practical guide to the managers in reacting to a certain change in some parameter values, such as in the eventuality of increase in the setup cost for taking production of a larger lot size in one setup and supply the same to the buyers in more number of sub-batches without changing the sub-batch size.
