ABSTRACT The Historia Brittonum and accompanying genealogies lay out a lineage for the Gwynedd dynasty which has been considered dubious, mainly because of Cunedda’s unlikely number of sons, and the fact that those sons are eponyms for the provinces of later medieval Gwynedd. These discrepancies have led to the conclusion that at least two dynasties, Roman and native, had been combined to form the extant lineage. Recent work on the dating of Marwnad Cunedda has suggested additional attention to the subject might prove fruitful, especially by examining the figures individually and in discrete groups in conjunction with local folklore, recent historiography and available primary sources.

ABSTRACT This article contributes new knowledge to the area of metropolitan planning in Portugal by shedding light on the first generation of metropolitan governance legislation and territorial dynamics in Porto. The overall premise is that the rise in polycentrism in Porto and the weakening of its city centre in the 1990s was a timely representation of the city-region development process taking place in Portugal’s second largest metropolis. Strategic investments in the city since then have substantially contributed to filling that activity vacuum to the point where concerns have now emerged about commercial and touristic gentrification. Porto’s metropolitan area was greatly affected by being the second most important urban area in the country and new planning mechanisms and strategies were needed to attempt to fully close the activities and spatial gap in the city of Porto as well as to efficiently and effectively help plan the whole northern metropolis.

ABSTRACT In the nineteenth century the stereotypical association representing sugarcane growers was a planters’ association, the epitome of which, was the Hawai’ian Sugar Planters’ Association. The Herbert River Farmers’ Association, formed by a group of small farmers in the tropical north of Australia, was the antithesis. This is because they represented two distinct modes of agricultural production, the plantation and the small farm. Both inherited their associative traditions from the British Isles. Much of agricultural association scholarship has had a tendency to focus on associations formed by the elite and studies of regional and local small agricultural associations are scattered and uncoordinated. Drawing upon the Hawai’ian and Australian sugarcane industries this article explores the differing modes of production adopted in each to explain why their agricultural associations took different paths. Hawai’i and north Queensland offer a unique context for a comparative examination of associational behaviour on the colonial periphery.

ABSTRACT Suburban development was not a common feature of the built form of Spanish cities in the nineteenth century but Málaga experienced significant suburban growth at its eastern periphery in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The physical development of the suburbs will be examined, stressing the role of key individuals and the influences upon them. The physical character of the suburbs and their subsequent changes were strongly influenced by national and local events which impacted upon the nature of the built environment. However, the social composition of the area did not necessarily reflect the growth of a “new” urban elite as many families retained additional residential premises in the core. The promotion of Málaga as a tourism resort also had a significant impact on the social composition of the area producing a type of suburb rather different from the permanent single-family dwelling middle-class environment typical of northern Europe.

Generally, this section is structured in a chronological framing, with its first chapter examining the medieval origins of relief until the mid-eighteenth century; its second chapter moving onto outdoor relief during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and a chapter on self-help and charity focussing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The outlining of the island’s alternative legislative development and settlement policy makes interesting reading, but again the focus is eighteenth-nineteenth century heavy, with the period 1560–1760 being only largely dealt with in 11 pages and so making any claims to an in-depth study in this part of sixteenth and seventeenth-century parochial welfare perhaps redundant. In addition, the flow of the four parts of the book also seem to slightly askew: part one, Context, and part two, Welfare, work nicely together but it is unclear where the join is, apart from chronological narrative, between them and the latter two parts of the work. The most engrossing section of this work is the Town Hospital, St. Peter Port’s workhouse, whose four chapters take up most of the book’s length and reads like an in-depth, stand-alone institutional study. Throughout this section, we are presented with a detailed, thematic study of the institution including an administrative overview; inmate demographics; the routine of daily life in the hospital; and the Town Hospital asylum. The final section of the book outlines the chronological picture of welfare between 1900 and the early twenty-first century. In summary, the key issue here is its date range; the scope is huge. The mammoth task of researching and compiling such a study highlights Crossan’s ability as a researcher but ultimately, what we are presented with is a substantial, administratively driven narrative. What Crossan offers here is a large, readable and obviously passionate local study of welfare in Guernsey which is useful in presenting the familiar strands of welfare historiography in a new and understudied context. The book will be attractive to those with a personal connection to the island but Crossan’s claim in her introduction, however, was one of contextualisation and comparison, and one feels the book falls slightly short here; perhaps a shorter date range could stimulate a more comparative study. Despite this, what we are left with is a worthwhile window onto a little-known geographical area of Britain’s welfare history. Crossan’s work is detailed, and highly researched, outlining the story of nearly five centuries of Guernsey’s welfare system, providing intriguing evidence for exceptionalism which one hopes will stimulate readers into further research in the future.

ABSTRACT This article will examine the definition of ‘Battleship Grey’ and establish its origin earlier than current thinking. Battleship Grey is widely used as a generic descriptor for virtually any shade of grey, but a recent examination of the last two remaining warships from the First World War has provided a unique opportunity to precisely define this colour for the first time. Specifically, the analysis of two local phenomena: the dialogue between a group of naval officers discussing the efficacy of using grey paint as an effective camouflage colour and the materials analysis of the remaining historic paint layers on both vessels. These local developments challenge the existing historiography and demonstrate a need for naval concealment emerged long before our current perception of the origins of naval camouflage.

ABSTRACT Clarion County, Pennsylvania, was a regional leader in historic iron production in the mid-nineteenth century with a majority of its furnaces fuelled by charcoal. Little is known about the colliers that crafted the charcoal used by the county’s historic iron furnaces. I used United States Census data from 1850 to 1880 to develop a demographic profile of Clarion County colliers. Collier numbers in Clarion County peaked dramatically in 1850 with the rise of the iron industry and declined exponentially through 1880. Most colliers were white, male and Pennsylvania-born. Few remained in the profession for more than one census date, largely becoming labourers and farmers that remained in the county or region. Likewise, movement of colliers from Clarion County to other iron-producing regions was minimal. The rise and fall of colliers in Clarion County suggest a local response to economic opportunity consistent with the boom-bust nature of the mid-nineteenth-century charcoal iron industry.
