SIGSOFT tutorial on program verification (Tutorial Session) SIGSOFT程序验证教程(教程)

An introduction is given to the fundamental issues of proving properties of computer programs. No attempt is made to provide an exhaustive survey, but rather to convey enough of the basic concepts and techniques of proving programs so that the interested reader can pursue specific interests on his own. Three fundamental aspects of program proving are described. The first is a general view of basic goals and objectives. The second is an introduction to the basic techniques of proving programs by inductive assertions. The third addresses applying these techniques in practice.

In the effort to construct intelligent computer systems, a primary consideration is how to represent large amounts of knowledge in a fashion that permits their effective use and interaction. Indeed, many researchers in the field of artificial intelligence have come to believe that knowledge representation is the fundamental issue in the attempt to understand intelligence. The presentations in this session explore this issue and describe two current important knowledge representation methodologies: frames and semantic nets.

Microprocessor control of customer premises telecommunications equipment 用户驻地电信设备的微处理器控制

A microprocessor implementation of the control of customer premises telecommunication equipment is presented. The system architecture is described and the processes run under real time control of the microprocessor are outlined. The principles used in the software engineering of the microprocessor code are highlighted and the software and hardware utilities employed in the system design and debugging are explained. The use of a top down approach to this coding application reaped great rewards in terms of an efficient design effort. Maintenance considerations, a key concept in real time telecommunications applications are summarized.

This session has no single theme; rather, it includes a variety of topics of interest to the SIGPLANer. Griswold will be unveiling some new string processing concepts which are being developed in the string processing language SL5. Grazinger, et.al, will be bringing us up-to-date on some recent advances in the compiler generator area. Finally, Buckles and Hintze will show us how a compiler can (and should) be designed and implemented in a disciplined, structured manner. It promises to be an interesting session.

A revision of the 1966 Fortran standard, as proposed by the X3J3 committee, was published for review and comment in the March issue of ACM SIGPLAN Notices. Important new features are CHARACTER data type, more general use of expressions, file cataloging, and DO loops with negative increment or zero trip count. An IF-THEN-ELSE control structure is under consideration. This tutorial will cover (1) Fortran and Subset Fortran—what is a standard conforming program? (2) The CHARACTER data type; (3) Input and output: files and cataloging.

Data base management systems, utilizing advanced techniques and methodologies, are being designed and developed by research groups on university campuses today. This paper describes how the capabilities and resources of one such system, normally used by faculty, students, and staff in a university environment, are being introduced and incorporated into a non-academic professional planning application. As a case in point, we present a plan to integrate the resources, talents, and needs of small size city and county planning departments with the facilities and expertise of information specialists based on a nearby university campus. The stated goals, the resources, the methodologies, the difficulties, and the successes are presented. Also discussed is the concept of “technology brokers”—people whose function is to bridge the communications gap that is often present between technology developers and potential users.

A system that aids in testing programs is described. This system symbolically executes program paths and creates symbolic representations of the output variables that aid in verifying a path's computations. The conditional statements that affect the flow of control are also symbolically represented by a set of inequalities. The inequalities are then evaluated to determine input data that would cause execution of the path. The system also does extensive error checking by simulating possible data dependent errors and then attempting to detect data sets that would cause execution errors.

Improving and refining programs by program manipulation 通过程序操作来改进和完善程序

By manipulating programs to reorganize the way they compute their results, it is possible to improve program performance in certain desirable directions. Further, using certain laws of exchange, it is possible to transform concise, abstract, high-level programs into efficient, concrete , underlying representations. This paper explores the notion of using source-to-source transformations interactively as a basis for an approach to program improvement and refinement. Examples of program manipulation are presented that convey both the flavor of the approach and its requirements.

In response to a recognized need to facilitate computing technology transfer in biomedicine, the Biomedical Computing Technology Information Center (BCTIC) was established by the Division of Biomedical and Environmental Research (DBER) of the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in July of 1975. BCTIC forged ahead into the tasks of designing guidelines and procedures, acquisition and packaging of computer codes, data, and interface designs; building a bibliographic data base; and maintaining a directory of the user community. This paper presents the problems BCTIC has set out to solve, describes its functions, and categorically relates its functions to the stated problems. It also gives a progress report on BCTIC's developmental phase, and takes a look to the future of BCTIC as a national technology resource in biomedical computing.
