Theory and empirical findings in the research of place-name use. A summary of a habilitation dissertation The starting point of the habilitation dissertation is the embeddedness of place names in social surroundings. The paper explores the questions of place-naming and place-name use in eight chapters. After a short review of the previous findings in the relevant literature, the author tries to define the concept of place-name sociology and its research fields in a broader sense. Then the author deals with the questions of name variants and of the functions of place names. The central part of the dissertation is constituted of a survey carried out in the settlement of Tép. In connection with the survey, the author presents the method of mental mapping and findings in the field of the knowledge of place names. By taking these ideas as a base, the author redefines the concept of name community, focusing on place-name competence. In a separate chapter devoted to slang place names, the author describes how this place-name competence works. Finally, the author pre-sents the collected local place names, also illustrated on maps.

Borrowing of names for domestic animals among Romanian-, Hungarian- and German-speaking livestock farmers until the second half of the 20th century The paper seeks to explain historical asymmetries in the mutual borrowing of animal names across the broad contact zone between Romanians, Hungarians and Germans. Data collected since the 1890s shows that vastly more names of Hungarian origin were given to horses and oxen in particular by Romanian and Transylvanian Saxon peasants than the other way around, to the extent that such names often accounted for the majority of the animal names in related inventories in villages far away from Hungarian-speaking areas. This tendency was less pronounced with cows, and cannot be attested with regards to dogs, while the reverse was the case with sheep, although as a general rule, sheep have usually not been given individual names. In addition, the whole scale of borrowing animal names has not been accompanied by a similarly disproportionate outpouring of cattle- and horse-related vocabulary from Hungarian dialects. The author identifies aristocratic manors rather than Hungarian-speaking peasant communities as the more likely donors; moreover, the prestige their animals enjoyed as the major driving force, which led to the adoption of Hungarian names.

Where is Abbázia? Results of a questionnaire survey on the use of Hungarian exonyms The paper attempts to examine the current use of exonyms in the Hungarian language based on a questionnaire survey. The survey tested the knowledge of exonyms indicating places (i) in the area of the historical Hungary, (ii) in parts of Central Europe and (iii) in areas beyond our region; the tendencies in exonym use according to communicative situations (cf. the use of place names on maps, in official documents, in everyday communication, in the mother tongue and in an English language environment); and the social attitudes towards exonyms. Although the survey does not work with representative data, the results are expressive. The survey suggests that the use of exo-nyms in present-day Hungary is affected by ideological as well as linguistic factors. Most of the respondents chose the Hungarian name forms (i.e. the exonyms) consistently and accurately in the questionnaire, especially when historically well-established Hungarian name forms were tested; others remarked that if they knew the appropriate Hungarian names, they would use them. Acceptance of or favour for the ‘foreign names’ (i.e. the endonyms) could only be observed sporadically in the survey. Higher age and qualification, as well as neutral or even conservative attitudes in language use, seem to contribute to the preference for using Hungarian name forms, whenever it is possible. Linguistic factors such as language environment, spelling conventions and rules for suffixation also influence the choice of names. It is important to note, however, that there might be significant differ-ences in the currency of the Hungarian name forms; thus, well-known and little-known Hungarian exonyms can only be distinguished if the names are tested individually.

Surnames and ethnic categorization. The category of “Hungarian surname” in Hungary and in minority status The study investigates how lay ethnic categorization based on one’s surname works from theperspective of the prototype theory. The analysis is based on a questionnaire survey, in which 854Hungarian students took part from 21 universities in Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. Focus wasplaced on the evaluation of a list of surnames compiled based on several criteria. According toprevious results, the typical conditions for the category of HUNGARIAN SURNAME are the following:1. transparency, 2. spelling adjusted to Hungarian spelling standards, 3. typical Hungarianmorphological structure, 4. well-known Hungarian name bearers. In our present paper, weexamine several further aspects and types of surnames, such as name frequency, surnames of artificialor ethnonimic origin as well as surnames considered to be of Roma, German or Jewish origin. There are a number of substantial similarities in the categorization of the individual surnamesbelonging to name categories defined differently. There are some differences in categorizationcompleted by Hungarians who live in Hungary and those who live in neighbouring countries, butthere are more common features. However, there is no clear analogy between surnames and ethniccategories: the connections are quite complex and can be traced back to several causes; thus, relationsoften vary name by name.

Knowledge of place names in the Roma community of Kisbábony (Băbeşti, Romania) The paper focusing on the field of name sociology can be seen as a continuation of the author’s previous works. The previously published studies deal with the knowledge of place names in the Hungarian population in Kisbábony (Băbeşti, Romania) and the cognitive mapping by the communities living there. The present paper primarily focuses on the knowledge of place name in the Roma community of Kisbábony. The findings rely on interview-based research the author conducted in the village. After characterizing the sociological features of the target group, questions regarding what percentage of the Hungarian toponymicon of the settlement is known in the local native Hungarian-speaking Roma community and on which factors the results depend are answered. The second part of the paper compares the knowledge of place names in the Roma and the Hungarian ethnic groups. In light of the collected and analysed data, it can be concluded that the knowledge of place names in the various social groups which live in the same settlement can be entirely different depending on certain extralinguistic factors.

Role-playing games, the use of pseudonyms and literary fiction The paper contains the onomastic analysis of the comedy crime novel Zločin Hercula Poirona (The Crime of Hercule Poiron) by Eva Bešťáková, which was published in 2016. The focus is on the connection between role-playing games and the motivations behind the use of pseudonyms. The story of the Czech writer foregrounds a main character who one day decides to play the role of Hercule Poirot. His name (Hercule Poiron) and his features are similar to those of the world-famous Belgian detective. He manages to persuade many people that he is the real Poirot, however, he is well behind in character and skills. As a result, his game eventually fails. The story of Poirot has a metaphorical meaning. The conclusion of the study is that the behaviour of the characters in literary apocrypha is characteristically theatrical: similarly to actors, the characters use pseudo-nyms temporarily, while they step into the shoes of another person. This means that detective figures in Poirot stories not written by Agatha Christie must be considered figures who play the role of the real Poirot.

Rules of name management in Hungarian library processes The paper describes the currently valid rules for recording proper nouns in Hungarian library cataloguing. For publications and manuscripts, the name types that must be recorded include, among others, authorship (name or organisational name), the place of publication (geographical name), personal and geographical names, and in the ‘about’ field event names and organisational names may be recorded. According to the rules of data processing, a distinction is made between description and classification, i.e. the name forms on the documents and the standardized name forms in descriptions. This latter type is regulated by Hungarian standards published between the end of the 1970s and the mid-1980s and a 2005 regulation. As these documents were made in the period of pre-computerized index cards, many libraries have created their own local rules for the present day. Technical development, the request for libraries to match their databases and the pos-sibilities of turning to foreign catalogues put emphasis on the need for updating Hungarian stan-dards and introducing so-called name spaces to ensure consistency.

Personal name – ethnic stereotypes – prejudices. Findings of an examination The paper examines categorization and stereotypes from the perspective of social psychology, using the findings of so-called type creation and prototype theory. In connection with a group of personal names, i.e. the names that can be related to Roma ethnic groups, the author analyses the processes of developing stereotypes and prejudices, focusing primarily on how proper names as potential information sources to judge ethnic categories are involved in developing stereotypes. The author’s findings show that the correlation between the examined ethnic-marking first and/or family names (Levente Szabo, Bence Orsos, Rikardo Kovacs, Renato Lakatos) and the assessments of the papers handed in is insignificant. Even the strongest correlation based on variation analysis is insignificant, which means that the results deduced from over 300 assessments examined by the author do not support the assumed connection between ethno-stereotypical names and lower grades in school. With respect to the examined typical ethnic-marking name form consisting of both a first and a family name (Renato Lakatos) positive discrimination cannot be unambiguously proven either on the basis of the materials at hand.

Society and name use. Hungarian onomastic research projects in Slovakia. A summary of a habilitation dissertation The aim of the habilitation dissertation is to provide insight into the Hungarian-related onomastic research projects in Slovakia; into the relationship between society and name use; and into the contact phenomena arising from the connection between the Hungarian and the Slovak languages in the world of proper names. The dissertation consists of ten chapters that are thematically inter-related; however, they discuss the subjects of society and the use of proper names, the name use of Hungarians in Slovakia, the impacts of the Hungarian-Slovak bilingual environment on proper names from various aspects. The chapters also deal with several issues from the history of onomastic scholarship as well as onomastic terminology. The chapters deal with the topics as follows: (1) The place of onomastics in the system of linguistics and co-sciences and a review on the research domains of socio-onomastics focusing on the relations between society and name use; (2) The history of onomastic research projects in Slovakia; (3) A comparison of Hungarian and Slovak (Slavic) onomastic terminology; (4) The characteristics of the minority name policy in Slovakia after the change of the political regime; (5) Proper name standardization and name planning in the native language in Slovakia; (6) The identity-making function of proper names, the relationship between name and identity; (7) The change of fashion in giving first names in Slovakia; (8) Contact phenomena in the use of personal names of the Hungarians living in Slovakia; (9) The semiotic landscape of names in the Hungarian-inhabited settlements of Slovakia; (10) The Hungarian–Slovak pairs of mountain names in the High Tatras in the light of bilingualism and translation.
