As the baby-boomer generation of Korea is incorporated into the elderly population, personal needs for self-development and the demands for building a democratic community are growing. Lifelong education for seniors needs to be shifted from the paradigm of leisure and welfare to the paradigm of lifelong education, led by universities or equivalent educational organizations, that supports the awareness, growth, and social participation of the senior citizen. Considering this issue, this study is to present possible models for establishing university-led lifelong education system for seniors in Korea. Therefore, this research is to conduct a comparative analysis of the literature on the history of U3A development, educational goals, operating system, learner characteristics, and educational contents on the UK and Germany and to present a Korean university-led lifelong education model for seniors and suggestions for its implementation. As a result, the Korean model was presented in four different models: Continental U3A model application, university platform provision, expert provision, and British U3A model application. The suggested directions of Korean U3A are: first, universities and other organizations need to be involved and offer learners quality education and certificates afterwards. Second, the educational goals and contents of education need to be structured for the expansion of social capital of seniors and therefore community development.

The purpose of this study is to examines the effect of the elderly's place experience on the satisfaction of life in old age. We measured the ‘Sense of IBASHO’ by the elderly at home and in the ‘third place’ with a Korean version of the sense of IBASHO scale(K-SIS). Sense of IBASHO includes complex elements and it means ‘a place where you can feel like yourself'. The subjects were elderly people over the age of 65 years living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Results Showed that the Sense of IBASHO had a positive effect on the life-satisfaction of the elderly. First, physical and social factors in the Sense of IBASHO experienced at home are factors that increase life-satisfaction and lower negative emotions. Second, the higher the physical aspect of Sense of IBASHO in the third place, the higher the life-satisfaction and positive emotion. In addition, the higher the personal aspect of Sense of IBASHO, the lower the negative emotion and the higher the self-worth perception. In conclusion, in order to increase the life-satisfaction of the elderly, it is important to consider the difference between home and the third place to obtain the Sense of IBASHO. Based on the results, we discussed the policies and practical approaches of social welfare.

This study aims to analyze the Korean studies on the learning experiences of middle-aged women from the multi-stage life approach. The women in selected 66 studies feature different experiences and educational needs of the women who are different from those of the previous generation. Through systematic review as a research method, general trends of the studies, the learning characteristics of the learners, the challenges and obstacles in learning and the suggestions addressed by the researchers of these studies were explored. As a result of the analysis, three key problems of the studies were derived. First, the transformative learning theory as a major theoretical perspective chosen in many studies tends to be problematic to be a explanatory lens of understanding middle-aged women as learners due to possible bias in the participant selection. Second, the learning experiences of the women are generally reported as ‘delayed experiences’ which may obscure the existence of previous learning experiences. Third, challenges and obstacles experienced in the learning process were mainly reported in the field of formal education, but the solutions suggested by the researchers are largely limited to individual efforts. Based on these critiques, suggestions were presented to build a robust lifelong education environment for middle-aged adults including these women.

As the elderly population grows and its dynamics change, there is an increasing demand for expanding the diversity of and improving the quality of old adult education programs. Therefore, as a theoretical framework for systematically analyzing the educational needs of the older adults, the applicability of McClusky's Educational Needs of the Ageing was examined. McClusky identified five educational needs: coping needs, expressive needs, contributive needs, influence needs, the need for transcendence. McClusky’s Educational Needs of the Ageing is an educational perspective based on life-span development, and it is a meaningful reference frame to evaluate the efficacy and comprehensiveness of an elderly education program. Through the evaluation of McClusky’s Educational Needs in terms of ageing discourse and changes in social approaches to old age, it was confirmed that while coping and expressive needs are the main focus of current old adult education programs, contributive, influence, and transcendence needs are equally important. Therefore, we argue that a balanced approach to the five Educational Needs is necessary. In addition, we re-evaluated the contributive, influence, and transcendence needs by reflecting on the evolution of societal perceptions on old age and role of the older adults.

This study aims to analyze the factors affecting the life satisfaction of retired, disabled people, utilizing the eighth data of the Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReLS), analyzed following the disability, gender, types and time of occurrence of disability. The independent variable consisted of individual, health, economic, and retirement factors, and the dependent variable was life satisfaction after retirement. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and linear regression analysis were performed for analysis. The results are as follows. First, retired non-disabled people showed higher life satisfaction than disabled people. Among the disabled group, women, physically disabled people, and disabled people who had disabilities before their retirement showed higher satisfaction than men, disabled people whose disability is not physical, and acquired disabilities after retirement. Second, the retired non-disabled group showed significance in economic variables and physical health. Third, when comparing gender, different variables affect men and women. Fourth, in other types of disabilities, retirement autonomy showed significance. Fifth, comparing the occurrence of disability, disabled people who obtained disabilities before retirement showed significance in individual factors. In contrast, the group who obtained disabilities after retirement showed limitations in daily life. This study suggested a support plan for improving life satisfaction for retired, disabled people.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reciprocity of intergenerational support exchanges and its characteristics which married women feel in the intergenerational relationship with their own parents and parents-in-law. For the purpose, we investigated the reciprocity of intergenerational support exchanges on 327 married women with children attending kindergartens in Chungcheongnam-Do using a structured questionnaire. To verify the difference between groups, we conducted t-test, one-way ANOVA, and paired t-test using SPSS 21.0. The main results were as follows: 1) In the relationship with parents-in-law, the subjects felt that they were giving more total, instrumental, economic, and information support to their parents-in-law than they were receiving from their parents-in-law; 2) On the contrary, the subjects felt that they were receiving more total, emotional, and informational support from their pro-parents than they were giving to their pro-parents were; 3) The subjects showed matrilinealization or bilateralization that they received more emotional, instrumental, economic, informational, and total support from their pro-parents than form their parents-in-law, and they gave more emotional, instrumental, informational, and total support to their pro-parents than to their parents-in-law. Finally, based on the research results, we proposed some suggestions to resolve family problems and intergenerational conflicts in the future.
