It explores the genesis, dynamics and challenges of women in drumming in Axim. The methodology for the study is based on participant observation and interviews conducted during fieldwork between 2001 and the early part of 2007, in Axim in the Western Region of Ghana. The structure of the work is in four parts, as follows: i. the evolution of chieftaincy in Ghana, ii. male dominance of state drumming and beliefs about menstrual blood, iii. women's incursions into state drumming, and iv. conclusion. Local gender ideologies vary considerably in fishing communities along the coast of Ghana. This article compares the extent to which women convert capital from the female market sphere into ownership of fishing equipment in the male fishing sphere in three ethnically diverse communities - Moree (Fante), Kpone (Ga-Adangbe) and Dzelukope (Anlo-Ewe). Kinship ideologies, post-marital residence patterns, and gender division of labour and roles in the local fishing economies shape women's place-specific manoeuvring spaces. It is argued that a loyal and trustworthy male cooperation partner is a prerequisite for the success of female entrepreneurs in a male arena like the fisheries.

This paper examines the evolving roles of Dagaare women in Dagaare oral poetry, and with that transformation, their changing status in the society. The issues of women as they are reflected in the oral poems they sing are also examined. Resources from fifty women, including discussions with people knowledgeable in Dagaare oral arts were gathered and analysed to understand how the situation of the Dagaare woman is changing. Particular women performers were also picked and their poems recorded for analysis, and they were also interviewed on their views on their changing roles and position in the society. The status of women is examined vis-a-vis their prestige, economic and political power in the society and is seen to be inexorably changing as their economic base improves and they gain more and more recognition in their society. Institutional factors that promote change such as migration, activities of NGOs and the Churches are also examined. One of the recommendations made is that much more needs to be done to give women an even higher status in the society.

Family Resources and Reproductive Health of Girls: A Focus on Money and 'Tugbewcwc': Puberty Rites Among the Dodome Ewes

There has been considerable concern about the reproductive health status of girls in Ghana in recent years due to the increase in premarital sexual activities amongst the youth, socio-economic implications of teenage pregnancy and illegal abortions. The major objective of this paper is to throw some light on how proper use of family resources could help resolve the problem. All families have certain resources such as money, time, energy, skills of members, and some community resources like schools and traditional society's puberty rites. However, most families do not have access to enough money to meet all the needs of all family members. Traditionally, resources are shared without due regard to needs of individual members, but rather using gender and age as yardsticks with the resultant inequalities in access; with men always getting more than their fair share and women and children not getting enough. It is important that parents make every effort to provide the needs of their children especially the girls, so that they do not accept money from men who in turn ask for sexual favours. In traditional societies in the past, specific rites were instituted to safeguard the reproductive health of the members. Examples of these rites were puberty rites. In Dodome, the puberty rite for girls is called Tugbewowo but it has been suspended for some years now. As part of these rites, girls are supposed to remain virgins till after the rites are performed. They are taught the arts of womanhood, motherhood etc. and are prepared to take their places as women in society. Modernization has eroded most of these resources that prepared girls to become effective members of society, producing teenage single parents. The rites served as an incentive for mothers to constantly remind their daughters of society's expectations of them and thus they preserved their chastity. That is no longer the case. An exploratory study in Dodome revealed that the majority would like tugbewowo to be reintroduced. It is recommended that (1) families be empowered financially to be able to meet needs of members (2) that a detailed study be carried out into tugbewowo with the aim of understanding and modernizing the rites for reintroduction in Dodome and the Ho district as a whole. It is concluded that the time has come to seek African solutions to African problems and end the adoption of Western values. (Institute of African Studies Research Review: 2003 19(1): 79-90)

Policy Implications of the Variations in Ghana's Fertility Transition
Pub Date : 2004-02-27 DOI: 10.4314/RRIAS.V19I1.22864

The results of three consecutive Demographic and Health Surveys (GDHS), carried out in 1986, 1993, 1998, show that Ghana's population has been experiencing a fertility transition. An analysis of the data, however, indicates that there are wide and increasing differentials in both the timing and trends in the process among geographic and socioeconomic subgroups of the population. Current Total Fertility Rate (TFR), for example, varies from around 3 to 7.This paper examines the policy implications of the variations in the fertility transition. The transition is associated mainly with urbanization and education (particularly of mothers). The differentials are therefore explained by increasing economic inequalities among the socioeconomic subgroups of the population and the administrative regions. Policies that seek to remove the disparities in the fertility transition in the country must therefore address this underlying factor. While implementation of reproductive health/family planning programmes will have to be continued, even as the level of unmet need for contraception is still high in the population, socioeconomic development goals that seek to address such population problems must be a first priority and also be at the centre of population programmes in the country. Another policy approach will be the documentation of the details of the process at regional, district and other levels because the national averages obscure the peculiar patterns and trends presents at such levels. The quantitative data so far gathered on the various issues in reproduction in the country will also have to be supplemented by micro studies that adopt qualitative approaches to discover issues that are not captured by quantitative approaches. (Institute of African Studies Research Review: 2003 19(1): 1-14)

Communicating 'nominatim': some social aspects of Bono personal names

This article describes various communication functions performed by Bono (a Ghanaian people) personal names. Indeed, in the non-western context, personal names have been linked to social status, or may have cosmic or religious significance, or may assume gender dimensions. From data obtained from interviews and observations, it establishes a basic twoHtiame Bono personal name format. It outlines the different characteristics, attributes and formats of Bono names classifying them into ascribed or acquired, circumstantial (fixed and substitute) and day-based names. The characterisation includes the capacity of certain classes of names to generate meaning. The article concludes with the observation that the dynamism of the naming system seems to be transforming name formats to a degree that is causing a loss in their communicative attributes. A future in which the communicative capacity of the Bono personal name may not be so evident is, thus, predicted.

It outlines the different characteristics, attributes and formats of Bono names classifying them into ascribed or acquired, circumstantial (fixed and substitute) and day-based names. The characterisation includes the capacity of certain classes of names to generate meaning. The article concludes with the observation that the dynamism of the naming system seems to be transforming name formats to a degree that is causing a loss in their communicative attributes. A future in which the communicative capacity of the Bono personal name may not be so evident is, thus, predicted.","PeriodicalId":383909,"journal":{"name":"Research in review","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126880217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper is based on several years of field research on African religious movements, particularly those led by women. It employs in-depth interviews, participant observation, collection of testimonies and case studies. It looks at how faith healing is patronised especially by women as a health delivery option. It suggests that, given the poor economic status of women, cultural beliefs, and the uncertainties of continuous medical services resulting from frequent strikes, or 'alutas' by hospital personnel, among other things, as well as the complementary role the churches play in health delivery, faith healing should be taken seriously by the national health delivery agencies. Faith healers include categories of religious personnel called prophets / prophetesses, male and female pastors, divine healers, traditional priests / priestesses etc. In this presentation, I focus on the first two categories
