Dante and the Latin Poets: Metamorphosis and Literary Antagonism in the Bedlam of Thieves

In Inferno’s Cantos 24 and 25 Dante points out the auctoritas of Latin epic poets (Ovid, Lucan), but uses a series of rhetorical figures intended to emphasise his own superiority and the novelty of his poetic enterprise. Dante competes with Ovid (Cadmus’s metamorphosis into a snake in Ov. met. 4. 569-603 = Dante Inf. 25. 103-138) by recycling Ovid’s grammar of description and lowering its high style according to the new poetic objective as he recounts the anti-sublime world of Malebolge. Virgil as a character of Dante’s Commedia also participates in this procedure, since he presents one of his epic creatures, Cacus (the monster slain by Hercules in Aeneid 8), in terms strongly divergent from the high diction adopted by the real Virgil as Aeneid’s author.
569-603=Dante Inf.25。

Ettore Romagnoli’s Horace in Black Orbace Rereading – with Digressions - the Bimillennial Conference Ettore Romagnoli的《Horace in Black Orbace重读——带着尊严——双百万年大会》
Pub Date : 2023-08-04 DOI: 10.30687/lexis/2724-1564/2023/01/009
Federica Sconza
The paper investigates the Fascist exploitation of Horatian poetry by analysing the speech held by Ettore Romagnoli in 1935 on the bimillenary of the poet’s birth. Romagnoli’s oration must sacrifice to the demands of the oriented reading of Horace’s work promoted by the regime themes and attitudes characteristic of the poet (the reflections on time and the precariousness of human life, the search for self-sufficiency and aurea mediocritas, the rejection of dogmatism). Instead, the intellectual who moves from a secluded position to full adherence to the new Augustan establishment is exalted, at the cost of historical and literary distortions.

The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that Quirinus in Enn. ann. 100 Skutsch is to be identified with Romulus. In addition to the comparison with Ov. met. 14.849 ss., new arguments are presented: the comparison with Liv. 1.16.6 and the use of the verb venerari, which is connected etymologically with Venus, who is a deity related to Romulus and the origins of Rome.

Re-reading Catullus 1.9 (o patrona...) 重读Catullus 1.9(o…)
Pub Date : 2023-08-04 DOI: 10.30687/lexis/2724-1564/2023/01/004
Luigi Silvano
Following the lead of those critics who have judged Catull. 1.9 patrona uirgo as the result of an error christianus, the author proposes an emendation based on the comparison with the incipit of the introductory elegy of Meleager’s Garland. As it has been demonstrated, in his dedicatory poem Catullus echoes in particular Meleager. AP 4.1.1-3, where the Greek poet refers to (i) himself and his poetic work, (ii) to his dedicatee, and (iii) to a not further specified Muse, all elements that can be found also in Catullus; moreover, Meleager introduces a fourth referent in connection to his divine patroness, i.e. the divinely inspired ‘composers of hymns’ (hymnothetai), which is lacking in Catullus’ c. 1: one could resolve this apparent inconsistency by conjecturing uatum instead of the pleonastic uirgo of the manuscripts. Another possibility would be to read patrona diua.

Evils Full of atē: Sophocles, Antigone 1-6
Pub Date : 2023-08-04 DOI: 10.30687/lexis/2724-1564/2023/01/001
M. Catrambone
The article proposes two solutions for the textually controversial incipit of Sophocles’ Antigone. In line 4, the corrupt οὔτ’ ἄτης ἄτερ can be emended to οὔτ’ ἄτης πλέων, an almost forgotten correction once tentatively proposed by Campbell. In lines 2-3, the syntax of Antigone’s question appears sound. Firstly, ὁποῖον οὐχὶ νῷν ἔτι ζώσαιν τελεῖ; in line 3 is a question governed by ἆρ’ οἶσθ’, with subject understood (Ζεύς). Secondly, ὅ τι Ζεὺς τῶν ἀπ’ Οἰδίπου κακῶν in line 2 is a pre-posed topicalised clause, with verb understood (τελεῖ or ἐστί), offering the background information from which the ὁποῖον-question takes its cue.

Ciceronian Elements in Virgil: The Incipit of the First Bucolic 《
Pub Date : 2023-08-04 DOI: 10.30687/lexis/2724-1564/2023/01/005
Francesca Boldrer
The article aims to highlight the presence of several Ciceronian elements in the first verse of Virgil’s first bucolic. These are lexical, thematic and phonic references, which hardly seem random. Virgil therefore shows a careful reading of Cicero’s works both in prose and poetry, with intentional allusions, and a literary and spiritual closeness to him.

About the Circulation of the Heracles Myth in the Imperial Age Some Suggestions on the Herakliskos of Philostratus Minor

The fifth Imago of Philostratus Minor, which portrays baby Heracles’ struggle against the snakes sent from Hera, appears to be inspired by two Pindaric works (Nem. 1 and *Pae. 20). This paper explores the possibility that some linguistic features of Philostratus’ ekphrasis can be borrowed (presumably by secondary source) from Panyassis’ lost Herakleia. By going against the communis opinio, it is suggested that this archaic exametric poem may have survived through Imperial Age, until the 2nd century AD, alongside other mythographic and poetic works about the Heracles’ saga.
