This article aims to trace nidol-lonko (great cacique) Juan Lorenzo Kolupi, from his appearance in military records during the Guerra a Muerte (1819) until his death in 1850. The underlying objective is to understand the operation of Mapuche politics during the first half of the nineteenth century, starting from an analysis of his particular characteristics and those he shared with his peers. Focusing on important events he experienced, we realized that his power was built in a war-like scenario that linked the Mapuche society’s internal conflicts with Spanish-Chilean military divisions. In this context, Kolupi’s actions were effective and valid. However, these properties weakened during his last years, to the point where he became an inconvenient actor for much of the present concerns at the border.

This article addresses the development of Santiago’s urban periphery through the analysis of Renca’s case during Carlos Ibanez del Campo’s dictatorship (1927-1931). A place that was somewhere in between urban and rural. In this case, the housing and basic services problem was strongly manifested in the shanty towns or poblaciones which were characterized by a lack of hygiene, equipment, and infrastructure. Ibanez responded to this situation by implementing a legislation and a bureaucracy that sought to regularize the configuration of these growing shanty towns by reinforcing the municipality (local council) and the Intendencia’s role (provincial government). This action was linked to massive and active neighborhood organization. Furthermore, the analysis of different documentary sources will highlight the relevance of new urban actors such as the “mejoreros” and long-term site buyers, which promoted a change in housing policy and the way in which Santiago’s growth was addressed.

This article analyzes the creative process of Les races aryennes du Perou by the Argentinian writer Vicente Fidel Lopez, since its first appearances in La Revista de Buenos Aires until its publication in Paris in 1871. It also examines the first receptions (positive and negative) the work received in the local and regional intellectual sphere, as well as the impact that his work had in European academic circles. In this way, it seeks to recognize the characteristics of American publicity and the intellectual world, and to evaluate, in this context the obstacles (material and intellectual) that have emerged around the research related to linguistic-philological studies. At the same time, this analytical exercise enables us to observe how the book and its author worked to become the protagonists of the central debates around the study of language and acquired a relevant place in the nineteenth century worldwide publishing market.
