In this article we present two of the consultative responses to the document round for the new ethic guidelines for research that was published by NESH autumn 2020 (Fürst m-fl. 2020, Sosialantropologisk institutt 2020). The backÅrgang 32, nr. 2-2021, s. 87–101 ISSN online: 1504-2898 CAMILLA HANSEN OG ELISABETH L’ORANGE FÜRST 88 ground for the consultative round is the new GDPR regulation that have several practical consequences for disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, not least for Social Anthropology. The article contextualizes the consultation texts focusing what we call a silent import of hard science and quantative methods into qualitative research methods like participant observations and ethnography. We analyse the texts using concepts like management practises and governmental rationality. We argue that the new ethic guidelines for research has consequences that put participant observation methodology, research freedom and openness as well as ethical courage under pressure. Requirement of beforehand approved research questions, informed consent, anonymity, ethical considerations of vulnerability/ sensitivity limit the fields of study, as well as methodological approaches, research processes and ways of writing. Bureaucratic practices enact a power displacement, we argue, that limit diversity in research and education.

“The road to paradise” is an ethnographic fiction, situated somewhere in the space between ethnographic data and literary writing. The first part is a story about a Pakistani migrant family in Denmark that explores the complex, con-tradictory and often forbidden feelings we may be confronted with when a close family member is struck by serious illness or, as in this case, grow old and experience failing physical abilities and dementia, and therefore needs to be cared for. The second part is a staged interview in which the author, Mikkel Rytter, explains his text and writing tech-niques and discusses the potentials of ethnographic fiction in anthropological knowledge production – but as the interview proceeds, the reliability of the author becomes a central theme.

Everyday experiences in the Covid era can affect how we think about ourselves and our own bodies. Through rou-tines like hand-washing and disinfection, distancing and mask use, we are reminded of certain things concerning the relation between our bodies and our surroundings. We experience the body as porous, distributed, stretched out in time and space, and involved in relations that can make it appear unpredictable to us.

The article draws on experiences from generating data for a PhD. During the period of fieldwork in a Norwegian school, new regulations based on EU’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) were implemented. With refer-ence to similar experiences from various Norwegian anthropologists, the article argues that the new regulations mar-ginalise ethnographic work even further. I suggest that an overall positivistic notion of research data might lie behind this, and I argue that a consequence could be that we simultaneously lose ways to perceive and understand silent knowledge and backstage knowledge. Furthermore, I argue that, in some cases, fulfilling the demand for documen-tation might inflict harm on people whom the regulations are intended to protect.
