The sudden death of Rev. George P. Knapp (1863–1915), head of the American Mission in Bitlis and pioneer investigator of the Armenian genocide, has remained unresolved for over a century. A hitherto ignored deposition from 1919 describes his tragic last days and murder by Turkish gendarmes escorting him to Diarbekir.

This short note discusses some new archival information regarding the family of antiquities dealers of Armenian origin, father and son Nasri and Levon Ohan, who owned three shops in Jerusalem. They conducted business with archaeologists, took a part in the Dead Sea scrolls affair, were forced to escape, and were even robbed. In this story, the dramatic events of the twentieth-century past of the Holy City are closely intertwined with the archaeological research history and the destiny of one family.

The term indigenous has been used as a contextual reference to Armenians in relation to Asia Minor. In the ruins produced by the conjoined interests of various ruling classes and global capitalism, how does one come to understand (collective) Armenian indigeneity beyond an experience of ongoing loss? In this article, I propose divesting from exclusionary and abstracted nationalist articulations of indigeneity. I draw on a queer feminist reinterpretation of an Armenian fairy tale, as an opening for healing Armenian necrophilic indigeneity and orienting toward the preciousness of life.

The earliest attestation of the toponym Taghavard, from Artsakh’s Martuni region, dates back to the 17th century. This coincided with the founding of Avetaranots, the settlement of Varanda’s rulers Melik-Shahnazaryan. Taghavard is located on the right bank of the Köndalan river and to the roads to Avetaranots. This article discusses the identical meaning of river-name Köndalan with the place-name Taghavard and the important role for its interpretation. Taghavard’s geographic location and its function as an entrance to Melik’s settlement deduced the meaning of the toponym as a “corridor pavilion.”
