Landscape and Embodiment in Sylvia Townsend Warner’s Lolly Willowes and The True Heart
Pub Date : 2018-10-26 DOI: 10.14324/111.444.STW.2018.05
H. Baker
The essay contextualises Lolly Willowes and The True Heart in relation to interwar ideas about landscape and ruralism. It argues that the protagonists Laura Willowes and Sukey Bond depart from normative relationships to the English countryside in order to orient themselves more independently in their worlds. It suggests that Warner invests in potentialities of what Sara Ahmed analyses as ‘disorientation’, and that in her nuanced evocations of sexual deviance, landscapes become a prompt for the discursive construction of queer subjectivities.

Holy and Profane Love in Sylvia Townsend Warner’sMr Fortune Fictions
Pub Date : 2018-10-26 DOI: 10.14324/111.444.STW.2018.04
H. Daniels
Focussing on Mr Fortune’s Maggot and ‘The Salutation’, the essay argues that dialogues with Platonic philosophy and Pauline theology are finely threaded through Warner’s fictions. It suggests that Warner strips the ideas of agape and eros of their divine pretensions, confines them to the earth, and sees them in a profane light.

These two poems reflect on Sylvia Townsend Warner and her milieu. The first recalls an incident about Warner’s burial and the second concerns a later tenant of a house Warner rented in the 1930s.

The Politics of Reorientation in Summer Will Show
Pub Date : 2018-10-26 DOI: 10.14324/111.444.STW.2018.06
Cornelia-Catrinel Dunca
The essay argues that Summer Will Show offers the reader a ‘politics of reorientation’. It suggests that the novel centres on moments of transition, which are for the protagonists moments of reckoning and rebuilding that reconstruct their political priorities and understandings. The narrative shows the protagonist Sophia Willoughby reorienting herself not only to see, but also to address the situation which was for her previously in the background. The essay analyses interrelations between class, gender, sexuality and race in the novel.

History and Fantasy in The True Heart 《
Pub Date : 2018-10-26 DOI: 10.14324/111.444.stw.2018.08
L. Haenlein
The essay argues that Warner’s 1929 novel The True Heart explores the possibility of feminist fantasy within the context of historical realism. It considers the pressures exerted on the protagonist Sukey Bond by the constraints implicit within historical, classical, and religious contexts, and looks in particular at the gender implications of the novel’s debt to Apuleius’s narrative of Cupid and Psyche. The essay compares the ideas of emancipation in The True Heart with those in its predecessor Lolly Willowes .

The article surveys, summarises and assesses the critical reception and cultural reputation of Sylvia Townsend Warner. It recalls the very limited role women writers played in Montefiore’s own university experience as a student of English and discusses their growing prominence in the 1980s and beyond under the influence of the feminism of that time and in particular of feminist publishing houses.

Warner’s draft of a preface to her novel The True Heart probably dates from the mid-1960s. It includes details about the background and composition of the novel that were not included in the shorter version of this piece that appeared as the preface to the 1978 Virago Press edition of the book.
