The article addresses the relationships between migrations, gender, and family dynamics, focusing on the Creole society ofCape Verde. Based on field research data from Boa Vista Island, from which many women have emigrated to Italy to work ashousemaids, I reflect on the constructions of family dynamics in a territorial and relational space that is not restricted topeople who reside in physical proximity. In a process that I denominate making family, networks of support and solidarity to which people constantly turn, people come and go between the two localities. This is the result of long-term planning that obeys both the Cape Verdean logic that to grow it is necessary to leave and the adaptability of projects of mobility to the labormarket and Italian immigration law.

This article discusses the role of food and food circulation in contemporary migration. Based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Rio de Janeiro in 2014 with young Portuguese immigrant families who have entered the country recently, the article focuses on their dominant perceptions and values concerning local food practices, as well as their routines on food selection, acquisition, preparation, and consumption to examine and discuss the group’s strategies of belonging and positioning in Brazil. Moreover, this discussion also explores the centrality of food in the evocation of origin and its relevance among the things that circulate across the Atlantic Ocean, following the same route the families travelled.

We propose an analysis of the formation of urban spaces for the use of crack and other illicit drugs in the Lagoinha neighborhood, central Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Known as “Cracolândias”, these territories are analyzed from the perspective of the ecology of crime, which raises the question about the distribution of deviations and crimes in urban centers. The study has quantitative data and a qualitative research of the neighborhood in question, which serve as a basis for knowledge of this complex social reality.
