ABSTRACT The preservation of popular music has traditionally faced numerous philosophical and practical obstacles, but do-it-yourself archives present an alternative method that warrants further attention. As grassroots cultural sites, they largely resemble community archives in their focus on community in all aspects of collection and preservation. DIY is a response to mainstream organizational and production structures that encourages self-sustainability and community engagement. Translated to archival practice, this ethos can provide the appropriate handling of music, something so prominent in human society but often missing from the formal cultural heritage sector. In this paper, I will further define DIY, specifically in relation to community archives. I will explain the importance of DIY music archives and describe several problems they face. In the end, I will maintain that further research and care be focused on DIY music archives to ensure that music and the communities built around music maintain their due places in our collective history.

ABSTRACT This case will cover the experiences that the Online Learning Librarian (OLL) and E-resources Librarian (ERL) worked on adding a module about privacy to a 1 credit Information Literacy course at the University of North Florida (UNF). There will be a discussion of what motivated the OLL to include data privacy as a module within Canvas, how the module was implemented, and the student experience in this course. At UNF, librarians have taught undergraduates in LIS1001 “Beginning Library and Information Systems Studies since the 1980s. The course has focused on information literacy and information freedom; data privacy, however, has not been included. Despite this, many students have asked about what happens to their data submitted into UNF systems. When students enter the UNF Thomas G. Carpenter library, they must scan their student IDs, which provides the library statistical data of major, academic standing and other identifying information. In addition, all students, in person or online, must use authentication when logging into computers, into databases, when reading ebooks, etc. Since Dan Feinberg, the OLL, started working at UNF in 2017, students complained to him regarding the data necessary to attend school. These off-the-cuff discussions reflected a desire for information freedom. After discussing privacy issues, the ERL and the OLL decided to come up with a module on data privacy that would work for undergraduates in the LIS1001 course. The OLL and ERL considered what aspects of privacy to cover (i.e. how much on technology) and resources to include, focusing on materials appropriate for undergraduates and that related to their experience. The OLL developed and built a unique module in Canvas that was used already in one course and will be used in future semesters. Within this structure, students learned about privacy issues in higher education and expressed their interpretations of privacy, what it means to them, and considered what they are willing and able to sacrifice to maintain privacy as college students in 2020.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to study the scattered behaviour of the overall published output of library service quality literature. Different parameters have been taken into consideration to analyze the literature on library service quality. The bibliographical data of the total number of publications published on Library Service Quality (LSQ), during 1960–2018 were searched from the Scopus database by using the search phrases, “Library Service Quality”, LibQual and LibQual+, in Title, Abstract and Keyword have been used with Boolean operator ‘OR’ on December 8th, 2019. The search query resulted in 290 records. The first-ever publication published in the field of library service quality was published in 1997 as reflected from the Scopus database. The data were analyzed to observe the year wise pattern of growth of output with citations per publication (CPP), most prolific countries, institutions, and authors. It also identified the distribution of citations with highly cited papers and further source titles were used to establish the linkage between research results. Analyzing authors, institutions and country of the publications, citations complete count methodology was followed. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Iran were found to be the leading contributors to the field, and the pattern of growth is undulating. The journal articles (228) were scattered among 80 source titles, and it connotes that on an average, approximately three articles were produced by each source title. Moreover, a detailed and comprehensive content analysis of all the publications of clusters formed in co-citation and bibliographic coupling networks was employed to get the in-depth knowledge of the trend in concerning literature. The present study is the first bibliometric as well as text-analysis research to assess the overall research output on service quality in the field of Libraries & Information Science.

ABSTRACT Jammu and Kashmir is the seventh largest state (now a union territory) of India in terms of area, with about 1.25 crore inhabitants. It has 11 universities (Central and State) and 308 colleges affiliated with Jammu and Kashmir universities. With such a diverse higher educational structure, one presumes the region will have sufficient scientific output for scientometric analysis. The study tried to assess its research output and impact in science and technology by analysing 4,697 journal articles indexed in the Science Citation Index–Expanded database Web of Science. The examination of articles revealed that they are predominantly dealing with plant sciences, dairy and animal science, agriculture, and chemistry. All these articles have a mean of 7.24 authors and citation per publication of 6.43. The Jammu and Kashmir researchers’ international collaboration is primarily with Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The most prolific institutions are the University of Kashmir, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST), and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). The most productive researchers are Sheikh Javid Ahmad from Cluster University Srinagar, and Farooq Ahmad Masoodi and Aijaz Ahmad Dar from University of Kashmir. The study will serve as an index to assist researchers and organizations in Jammu and Kashmir and their publication profiles in the overall science and technology output of the state.

ABSTRACT The usage of smartphones and apps to communicate, retrieve information, locate places, and entertain is a norm today. However, to this day, many users are unaware of, or indifferent to, how smartphones (and other mobile devices such as tablets, fitness trackers, or smartwatches) could possibly breach their mobile privacy. This case study investigates and compares mobile privacy behavior and attitude of library and information science students from the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, U.S.A., with library and information science students from the Berlin School of Library and Information Science, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany. Qualitative ethnographic research methods such as interviews, participant observation, and an experiment were conducted between 2017 and 2018 both in Germany and the U.S.A. The findings reveal that there are nearly no cultural differences in mobile privacy behavior and attitude between participants. In fact, this study discovers and discerns different mobile privacy typologies. These typologies, ranging from “mobile privacy objection” to “mobile privacy learned helplessness” reveal how they impact German and American students’ privacy behavior and attitude in a similar fashion. The lack of significant differences between German and American library and information science students suggests that more could be done to raise privacy awareness, especially for mobile computing and emergent technologies such as facial recognition and A.I.

ABSTRACT When libraries transitioned their collection development from primarily print to greater reliance on e-resources, acquisition methods also shifted from a sales contract to a licensing business model. This shift effected the long-held perception that academic libraries support education and research through the preservation and provision of the scholarly record in perpetuity. Libraries can encourage copyright holders to participate in digital preservation initiatives, but to date few initiatives have seen a large uptake. Open Access publishing further amplifies this vulnerable situation. At risk is the assurance that digital scholarly content in all formats remains available to future users. This review of the digital preservation landscape examines a variety of case studies that shed light on the impact e-resource licensing strategies have on safeguarding perpetual access; the use of the unique rights libraries have under copyright law to preserve intellectual property; and the technological access complexities of digital preservation. Recognizing that practical, economic, and culturally responsive initiatives are limited by a library’s local capacity, the need to preserve e-resources has energized an increasing number of collaborative solutions. Using the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ concept that local efforts help build a National Digital Platform, this scan of diverse initiatives explores the evolving framework emerging in support of ensuring future access to digital scholarship.

Open Access publishing further amplifies this vulnerable situation. At risk is the assurance that digital scholarly content in all formats remains available to future users. This review of the digital preservation landscape examines a variety of case studies that shed light on the impact e-resource licensing strategies have on safeguarding perpetual access; the use of the unique rights libraries have under copyright law to preserve intellectual property; and the technological access complexities of digital preservation. Recognizing that practical, economic, and culturally responsive initiatives are limited by a library’s local capacity, the need to preserve e-resources has energized an increasing number of collaborative solutions. Using the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ concept that local efforts help build a National Digital Platform, this scan of diverse initiatives explores the evolving framework emerging in support of ensuring future access to digital scholarship.","PeriodicalId":39557,"journal":{"name":"Serials Librarian","volume":"80 1","pages":"107 - 113"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/0361526X.2021.1883206","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44459234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT This session discussed the knowledge base metadata lifecycle, current and upcoming metadata standards, and the role that knowledge bases play in e-resource management. The session provided different perspectives on knowledge bases, including from librarians, one of whom is a former knowledge base e-content analyst, and product managers, as well as a discussion of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) Automation: Automated Retrieval of Customer Electronic Holdings recommended practice and what this could mean for knowledge bases in the future. The session included a conversation regarding how leveraging knowledge bases can aid librarians in improving resource discovery within their own libraries and ultimately decrease the amount of time spent on metadata workflows.

Practical Approaches to Linked Data
Pub Date : 2021-03-09 DOI: 10.1080/0361526X.2021.1885897
Heidy Berthoud, Jeannie Hartley
ABSTRACT In this article, Jeannie Hartley presents research regarding linked data and its founder, and discusses how linked data can be used. Some benefits and challenges discovered in the research are discussed, as well as some requirements for the process. Focus is given to Research Description Framework (RDF) and Resource Description and Access (RDA) for use in linked data records. Hartley also offers an examination of some linked data projects. The article then transitions to Heidy Berthoud’s discussion of various linked data projects in process at the Smithsonian Libraries (SIL). She addresses the development of the linked data macro, SIL’s participation in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s (PCC) Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) in Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) Pilot Project, and early explorations into Wikidata.

Access to Supplemental Journal Article Materials
Pub Date : 2021-03-09 DOI: 10.1080/0361526X.2021.1883596
Suzanne Fricke, Electra Enslow, Susan Shipman
ABSTRACT The use of supplemental journal article materials is increasing in all disciplines. These materials may be datasets, source code, tables/figures, multimedia, or other materials that previously went unpublished, were attached as appendices, or were included within the body of the work. Current emphasis on critical appraisal and reproducibility demands that researchers have access to the complete life cycle to fully evaluate research. As more libraries become dependent on secondary aggregators and interlibrary loan, we questioned if access to these materials is equitable and sustainable. While NISO RP-15-2013 Recommended Practices for Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials was published in 2013, it is unclear if these recommended practices fully meet the needs of users; if aggregators and publishers are following these standards; and if library processes and procedures are facilitating access to supplemental journal article materials. While studies have surveyed authors, reviewers, and readers, or examined journal supplemental materials practices, no studies have surveyed library staff and librarians about their experience with access to supplemental materials and requesting and receiving supplemental materials through interlibrary loan. This presentation reported on a study surveying library employees from academic, hospital, public and special library settings in the United States about their experiences identifying, finding, and retrieving supplemental journal article materials; and proposes ways that libraries, publishers and aggregators can enable access to the complete published life cycle.
