Purpose. We assessed the anthropometric and iron status of adolescents from selected secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, anthropometric data, nutrient data, and blood samples were collected from 127 adolescents in Nigeria. Demographic information of the adolescents was obtained in the language of choice using validated questionnaires. Anthropometric indices (weight and height), multiple iron status indicator (hemoglobin, serum ferritin, and transferrin receptor) and inflammation marker (C-reactive protein) were measured using standard procedures. Subjects were classified by body mass index (BMI) categories as underweight, normal weight, at risk of overweight, and overweight according to the World Health Organization standard. Results. The mean age of the subjects was 16.0 ± 2.3 years. Majority of the subjects (55.1%) had normal BMI values, 21.3% were underweight, and 14.2% were overweight. Boys had significantly (<0.05) higher mean intake for energy and most n...

The purpose of this pilot study was to integrate theatre elements into interactive cooking workshops and assess if these experiences prompted attitude and awareness changes with adolescents about healthy eating. Over a 3-week period, 6 interactive cooking workshops were conducted by an artist-in-residence with a group of 21 low-income, predominantly Hispanic, high school sophomores. Social cognitive theory was used as a guide for lessons and outcomes assessment. Students prepared, discussed, and shared food, stories, and experiences about culture, health, and meals. Qualitative focus groups were conducted 4 weeks after the workshop series ended. The theatre-based cooking workshops elicited positive comments in attitudes about healthy eating, nutrition education, and enhanced cooking awareness among ethnically diverse youth. Results from preworkshop and postworkshop self-administered questionnaires showed positive shifts in healthy eating behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes. Qualitative statements supported ...

This study examined parents’ perceptions of obesity and its prevention in young children. A predominantly Caucasian population of parents (N = 71) of preschool-aged children completed a mixed-methods questionnaire assessing perceptions of childhood obesity. Analysis of variance revealed that men had lower mean scores on the awareness domain (M = 33.1, SD = 3.1) than women (M = 36.6, SD = 2.2; t = 4.6, P < .01), and parents of children enrolled in childcare 40+ hours per week reported the lowest mean scores, F(4, 66) = 4.3, P < .01. Significant differences in awareness were also observed based on work status, F(2, 68) = 8.81, P < .01, with parents working full-time (M = 35, SD = 2.9) having lower mean scores than those working part-time (M = 37.4, SD = 1.6) or staying at home (M = 37.3, SD = 1.6). Younger parents also reported better access to resources (M = 16.3, SD = 3.1 vs M = 17.8, SD = 2.6, respectively; t = 2.1, P < .05). Most parents (56%) reported a need for support despite familiarity with obesity...

Background. In 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics increased the daily recommendation from 200 to 400 IU per day of vitamin D for all infants. Therefore, it has become vital for pediatricians and other healthcare providers to recommend and verify that their patients are on vitamin D supplementation. Objective. To investigate the proportion of pediatricians recommending vitamin D at the first and 6-month visit in infants and to determine predictors of vitamin D supplementation practices. Methods. Retrospective chart review of 219 patients seen at well baby pediatric visits to document the vitamin D supplementation practices. The Wilcoxon rank sum test and Fisher’s exact test were used to make comparisons of weight, gestational age, gender, breastfeeding status, and insurance status based on vitamin D practices. Results. Eighty-seven percent of exclusively breastfed infants had no pediatrician recommendations for supplemental vitamin D at the first pediatrician visit, and 71% had no recommendations for...

Thirty children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) aged 3 to 10 years participated in this study exploring associations between problem eating behaviors, daily nutrient intake, and sensory disturbance. Parents completed surveys regarding the usual eating behaviors of their children. Children exhibiting more severe autism-specific disruptive behaviors at mealtimes were most at risk for suboptimal intake of select nutrients such as biotin, vitamin K, iodine, linolenic omega-3 fatty acids, and choline, which play a role in metabolism and bone and brain health. Children exhibiting food refusal tended to have increased caloric and nutrient intake. Picky eaters were more likely to consume adequate daily nutrients but experienced the highest levels of parent-reported taste/smell sensitivity. The findings of this preliminary study support a multifactorial approach to the management of problem eating behaviors in ASD.

Background. This cross-sectional study was done to assess undernutrition among children under the age of 5 years in a slum of Kolkata (n = 188) and to compare these results with z score and the conventional Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) system. Methods. Data were collected by interviewing the mothers of the children, conducting anthropometric measurements, and using World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 16. The chi-square test was used, and P < .05 was considered statistically significant. Results. Overall, around 60% children were undernourished (z score < −2 SD). The conventional growth monitoring detected only underweight children, but when the z score system of WHO Child Growth Standards was used, those children were further classified as wasting and stunting. As per the IAP criteria, 104 children were undernourished and 7 were severely undernourished, but by z score, 98 children were undernourished and 29 were severely undernourished. Conclusion....
