Media Architecture is uniquely positioned to merge built form and digital information, which can augment existing architectural contexts with socially relevant digital information. This paper presents a design case study to illustrate exactly how this merging can happen in the progression of a Media Architecture design process within different city contexts. By outlining the steps in the Sentiment Cocoon project from design intent to realisation we will show how the objective to bring real time human emotion into architectural context influenced each stage of the design. We explore emergent interaction patterns and behaviour. The role of prototyping interactive systems, algorithm development for data visualisation, light and material interactions, structural design and site context are evaluated in terms of how they serve to merge information and built form with the social core of a busy engineering office space compared to an outdoor implementation within a botanical garden as part of the biggest lighting festival in the world. Within this previously developed Media Architectural Interfaces (MAI) provide a useful framework to interpret the results.

This paper presents the early findings of studies in the role of data informing the interaction between the user, the public and public display. It focuses on exploring how different strategies amplify and stimulate these data-supported interactions. Building on the work by Tomitsch et al [13], we establish a taxonomy for data-based features under the category of key elements in urban visualisations: 1) addressed topics, 2) input technologies, and 3) visualisation output. We analyse how factors facilitate social interactions meaningfully through case studies of previous projects implemented and developed by Media Architecture research community. We suggest that data properties and manifestation play a significant role in 1) sustaining attraction to passersby 2) enriching public understandings of display, and 3) encouraging diverse participation.

In this paper we report on studies we conducted focusing on the use of Augmented Reality to annotate real sites with relevant archival content. This is an interdisciplinary study of novel interactive technologies and supportive platforms such as geolocation-navigation and contextual digital augmentation of archival material in public spaces. We involved community volunteers, experts and public in a participatory heritage initiative. We designed an experience that supported a multi-platform participation, via an online geo-tagging portal and a mixed reality navigational experience. In an iterative design process we explored the use and preference of mobile devices, the controlled design of digital content anchored to real sites and the use of AR to support urban narratives. This was achieved by conducting a series of user walkthroughs with recruited participants and workshops with local experts related to the case studies. In this paper we stress the importance of situating urban experience of digital archives and stories in the actual locations of the events they represent as to better support immersion, enhance place experience and reinforce situated learning. Our work contributes to the design of hybrid spatial experiences in the city context that relate to local memory and culture.

This paper speculates on the integration of sensory technology in architecture and in the infrastructure of cities. The objective is to study the potentialities - and effects - of this on society and the built environment through projects at UNStudio. The focus is twofold: (1) explore the intersections between 'health' and technology in architecture (2) to distinguish 'responsive' versus 'smart' cities.

Mapping Chongqing's Urban Media Ecology 重庆城市传媒生态映射

China's cities are being remade and rebranded with light emanating from ubiquitous digital media in the form of media architecture, urban screens, mediated retail environments, and mobile media in taxis, elevators, personal devices, and public transport. Chongqing is saturated with an increasing density of urban media making it a particularly pertinent exemplar of China's urban future and its complex urban media ecologies. This research maps Chongqing's urban media ecology using insights derived from expert interviews to establish the viability of further research testing co-designed urban media and participatory design as tools for urban planners, government, industry, and citizens. The findings suggest that in this cultural context the potential of urban media to introduce novel participatory methods benefiting urban planning is dependent on collaborations with property developers, manufacturers, and architects open to testing small scale interventions at a community level.

On the Way is a street-level urban media art project that locates a geography of waiting in the strengths derived from witnessing the hitherto unmapped places, sensations, temporalities, and experiences that sustain us in our daily commutes. Conceived of and executed by the Screens Collective with the support of JC Decaux and Tongji University's College of Design and Innovation, the project uses small-scaled networked and interactive screens, as well as public arts practices of shared walking and commuting, to explore the affective landscapes of waiting in transit in and around the infrastructures of an ordinary public bus.

Research on media architecture to date has predominately focused on the integration of digital technologies, such as low-resolution media façades, into urban environments within a public context. In this paper, we present an analysis of two case studies, which investigated the use of low-resolution display technologies within a residential context for visualizing data streams generated by Internet-of-Things devices. Each study involved the deployment of a display prototype and both studies focused on visualizing electricity data. The first study used the front yard as a deployment location to encourage friendly neighborhood competition on electricity consumption and the second study focused on visualizing the performance of residential solar panels in the home. The paper discusses how we used media architecture principles as a framework to inform the design of both prototypes. Based on an analysis of the two cases, we present seven design insights for residential low-res displays as well as a series of design recommendations for residential media architecture.

Emerging economic and demographic trends stimulate universities across the globe to promote better connections with industry, governments and communities. By clustering within Knowledge and Innovation Districts (KID), they are able to respond more quickly to societal and scientific challenges. Architecture is crucial in driving their success by providing spaces that encourage convergence, connectivity and proximity. In this paper, we report on the design process of a media façade for a new KID within Melbourne Innovation Districts. We analyze our process through the lens of client and design team, and illustrate how vision and motivation translate into tangible design outcomes. Our insights reveal interesting future directions for media architecture practice and research, by way of (1) its synergies with KIDs, (2) evaluating the success of noncommercial media architecture, and (3) the opportunities for media architects as experts that coordinate media architecture projects from conception to delivery.

Immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) have the potential to augment experiences within cities and the process of designing architecture. However, more work is needed to understand specific applications within these areas and how they can be designed. Therefore, the main aim of the workshop is to discuss and ideate use-cases for creating situated immersive AR, VR, and MR applications for the purpose of making cities more engaging and to help design the cities of the future.
