In the Japanese contemporary entertainment culture, few narrative universes have attracted such overwhelming local and global attention as Sword Art Online . Focusing in the first sixteen episodes of the eponymous anime, the following paper aims to explore and critically analyze it by reflecting it against the most famous and celebrated Spanish literary work: Don Quixote of La Mancha . Through the cross-cultural and cross-epochal juxtaposition of both works, this study proffers a suggestive reading of the ways in which the relationship between the anime’s protagonist Kazuto Kiragaya and his avatar Kirito mirrors, both distorting and reflecting, that between Alonso Quijano and his alter ego Don Quixote in Cervantes’s masterpiece. In addition, a close reading of these characters will explore how this anime series furthers the questioning of the notions of reality and appearance already begun in Spanish Golden Age texts. In this sense, this anime, despite being the product of different socio-historical and temporal conditions, shows wide-scale baroque sensibilities that can help an audience familiar with Japanese popular culture to reconsider and rediscover seventeenth-century Spanish literary figures.

The following article will try to analyze the impact, use and massification of firearms in the mapuche culture of the 16 th and 17 th centuries focusing on their warrior caste called weichafes . This elite stood out for their weapons handling and for battling face-to-face the modernity personified in gunpowder weapons conceived by the West. These battles occurred in the context of the Military Revolution, when European methods of warfare were expanded and adopted globally. The analysis presented here will use a perspective of military history and historical methodology, based on the review, classification and analysis of historical documents and related bibliography.

Parodic Abstract Crónica del rey pasmado tells the obstacles that Philip IV has to see naked his wife. The reason is that the religious and political authorities fear that this action will lead to the loss of the fleet that comes from America and to the military defeat in Flanders. This novel presents members of a court dominated by a primitive thought, according to which they expect God to protect them as if he were a totem, provided that the sexual taboo is not violated. Gonzalo Torrente Ballester presents a historical framework to make a very funny critique of an irrational cultural logic in Spain. This work takes a psychocritical approach to the parody made in Crónica del rey pasmado as a particular case of demythification and to its relation with irony.

The present study aims at evaluating the curricular reform of the reading comprehension subject (levels B1-B2) carried out in a Japanese university specializing in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language in 2019. The study conceptualizes reading comprehension as social activity and not as textual processing, which is the way numerous approaches often characterize it. Social activity is regulated by learners’ education trajectories. The methodology deployed was participatory action research. Two case studies corresponding to the two groups were conducted. The first had 31 participants and the second one 24. After determining learners’ education trajectories by means of coding the results of a questionnaire according to grounded theory, we proceeded to longitudinally analyze the discursive production of students in their responses to reading comprehension questions in three different assessments. The results allowed to conclude that students with intrinsic motivation trajectories, focused on understanding the world, obtained better levels of development and academic performance than those with extrinsic motivation trajectories, based on a pragmatic view of the reading activity (language learning, carrying out a learning task, landing a job). The study also established that the courses allowed most students to undergo significative reading comprehension development, even though, for some students, this was not reflected in their academic performance. For that reason, the introduction of dynamic methods of assessment is recommended. Finally, it was concluded that, by favoring the cultivation or adoption of intrinsic motivation trajectories, the reform was effective and fulfilled its objectives.

This article aims to introduce the literary figure of Shimizu Shikin (1868-1933), one of the most representative writers in the so-called Japanese ‘women’s literature’ of the 1890s. Activist, essayist and writer, Shikin advocated for the rights of women through literature in several of her works. In the middle of the effervescent genbun itchi literary movement, she innovated with a direct and natural style in The broken ring ( Koware yubiwa , 1891) in order to weather the stylistic restrictions to which women writers were subjected. Throughout unpublished Spanish translations, this article will analyze the commitment of her feminist beliefs in The broken ring
