Health promotion is a strategy that can be used in prenatal care and these actions favor the pregnant woman's knowledge about her baby's oral health. This work consists of presenting the care related to the oral health of the mother-baby binomial, according to the literature and consists of an integrative review of the literature in which the databases used were: LILACS, Pubmed and SciELO. As a search strategy, the following keywords were used: "Dental Care", "Prenatal Education", "Pregnant Women" and "Health Promotion". Among the inclusion criteria, studies published in Portuguese and English were chosen, selected between the years 2004 to 2021. The exclusion criteria were: articles that did not present relevant information on the proposed topic and works that contained outdated information on the topic. A total of 71 articles were found, 24 of which were excluded, and 47 studies were selected as the basis for this review. The gestational period shows several systemic changes and each woman goes through this experience differently. Thus, dental care during pregnancy is a very questionable topic, especially in accordance with the myths and beliefs created without any scientific evidence. The introduction of actions in oral health programs, aimed at the prenatal period, is essential for the health of the mother and baby. The dentist has the function of promoting oral health in the family environment.

The angiotensin-converting enzyme receptor 2, the main target of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is abundant in the oral cavity, making it a reservoir for the pathogenicity of the COVID-19 disease. Thus, the use of mouthwash prior to dental care has been adopted by several institutions, with chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, povidone-iodine, and hydrogen peroxide being the most commonly described solutions. The objective is to report the experience of the Maringá State University Dental Clinic (COD-UEM) as to the adoption of a protocol for the use of mouthwash in practical activities during the pandemic. Although there are no recommendations from the Ministries of Health, the World Health Organization or scientific evidence that this practice acts preventively, as in other services, the COD-UEM, in the biosafety protocol of the plan to resume undergraduate clinical activities during the pandemic, started to adopt mouthrinses with chlorhexidine 0.12%, which can be replaced by hydrogen peroxide 1% or povidone-iodine. It was concluded, based on the experience described, that despite the scarcity of scientific evidence, the use of mouth rinses is a resource often used to reduce the number of microorganisms in the oral cavity during treatment, and it is important to consider its use until further research is conducted.

This study aimed to examine the knowledge of patients and companions about enteral nutritional therapy (ENT) and compare similarities. This descriptive, prospective, quantitative study was conducted in a university hospital in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The study population consisted of 13 hospitalized patients and 47 companions who were interviewed over 7 months. Data regarding medical, nutritional, and nursing care were verified using electronic patient records. Data about the patients ENT was obtained through a structured questionnaire, and were compiled for this study based on the minimum requirements for ENT care in the RDC Nº 503. The statistical analysis used average and pattern deviation, median and 25-75th percentile, and number of cases and percentage. To compare proportions and agreements of the answers, the chi-square test and agreement of Kappa were used. The following was verified for patients and companions: lower correct answer frequencies in relation to the nutritional state, probe positioning test, type and quantity of prescribed diet, hand hygiene, prevention of distention/diarrhea/constipation, and different answers regarding the assessment of body weight, and knowledge of the position of the bed for feeding and hydration. It was concluded that the knowledge of patients and companions about ENT proved to be insufficient to promote patient safety. Information from companions, with few differences, is similar and in agreement with that of patients.

Giomer is a hybrid restorative material, developed in the 2000s, which presents a combination of characteristics and properties of both composite resin and ionomeric cement, but whose clinical indications are still unclear. The present review aims to evaluate the literature that addresses these indications, as well as the aesthetic and chemical properties, compared to traditional non-hybrid restorative materials. The bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed, LILACS and SciELO databases, from 2016 to 2022. It included articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and used strategies adapted to each database and descriptors compatible with the objective. Publications whose full versions were duplicated and/or unavailable for free access were excluded. From an initial total of 137 articles, 14 were selected. It was observed that there are still doubts about the amount of fluoride released over the time and about the possibility of a burst effect, which means the initial explosion effect that occurs in the first 24 hours and decreases with time, similar to what occurs with glass ionomer cement and does not with conventional resins. In the light of the consulted literature, it is possible to conclude that giomers, as well as composite resins, can be widely indicated for restorative procedures, as they have satisfactory resistance and aesthetics, in addition to releasing enough fluoride to prevent caries, making it possible to recharge them with this ion, as in glass ionomer cements.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and physical disabilities in Brazil and worldwide. Being caused by an interruption of vascular cerebral flow, it is able to lead the individual to death or generate functional disabilities. Aquatic physiotherapy has shown great results for the rehabilitation of these patients, which is provided by the physical properties of water, which are able to provide pain relief and muscle relaxation, thus facilitating ambulation. Thus, this study aimed to review published articles in order to report the effects of hydrotherapy as a physical therapy resource on gait and the balance of stroke patients. For this, a review of articles was performed in the electronic databases PubMed and PEDro and eight articles were chosen, after considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that this physical therapy resource provides benefits in functional aspects, gait quality, speed, and static and dynamic balance. Also, the bibliographic research allowed observing that the technique has effects when used to replace or add to conventional methods of soil therapy. Given the good results obtained, it appears that the technique can be used to treat a patient with a stroke.

Sweeteners provide a sweet taste to foods and are used to replace sucrose and reduce caloric value. Acesulfame potassium, aspartame, sodium cyclamate, saccharin, sucralose and neotame are the artificial sweeteners regulated in Brazil by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA). The consumption of these additives has become controversial due to recent scientific evidence questioning their safety and outcomes regarding weight loss, dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota, insulin resistance, diabetes and cancer. Even today, little is known about the long-term consequences of their consumption. Therefore, this study aimed to carry out a review of artificial sweeteners regulated in Brazil, contextualizing their regulatory framework, the technological implications regarding their use and the effects on health. Considering the now controversial outcomes regarding the consumption of many artificial sweeteners, and the long period in which levels of acceptable daily intake have been in place, it is suggested their consumption should now not be encouraged, being restricted to population groups that have a risk-based physiological or metabolic need to replace sucrose. Also, for these cases, it would be important to differentiate between foods containing different sweeteners (or tabletop sweeteners), to alleviate possible chronic health effects. New studies with more robust and consistent methodologies are required to support the safety assessment reviews of each artificial sweetener.

Infant mortality refers to deaths of children under one year of age, subdivided into neonatal mortality (early and late neonatal) and post-neonatal mortality, being considered an indicator for assessing the population's health situation. The study aimed at describing the infant mortality rates due to preventable causes, in children under one year of age and in the state of Alagoas, during 2017. A descriptive and cross-sectional ecological study was carried out, with a quantitative approach on mortality rates in the age group of children under one year old, based on secondary data available in the Mortality Information System, by the Informatics Department of the Unified Health System (Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde, [DATASUS]). This study was carried out from November to December 2019. During this period, in the state of Alagoas, 793 deaths due to preventable causes among children under five years of age were recorded in the Informatics Department of the Unified Health System. 83.98% (n=666) of these deaths corresponded to children under one year of age, with death cases in the early neonatal period being the most prevalent, followed by deaths in the post-neonatal and late neonatal periods. Among the cities in Alagoas, Maceió ranks first and Arapiraca is in second place in relation to the infant mortality rate. Deaths due to preventable causes in children are a strong indicator, as they evidence the quality of the health service offered, and it is possible to note that, although it presents a decreasing trend, this indicator is still alarming and that public health measures should be adopted.

There are few reports in the literature concerning needle fractures during the local administration of anesthetic solution in dental procedures. However, the risk still exists. The patient’s unexpected movement during anesthesia, bending the needle prior to its use in the tissue, incorrectly performed anesthetic technique, uncooperative patient, small needle diameter or size may be considered substantial risks of fracture. At the moment the needle fracture occurs in the tissues it can move to the patient’s vital regions, and it is of utmost importance to remove it. If it is not possible to remove the needle immediately, an oral surgeon should be contacted to remove it under general anesthesia at the hospital. This paper aims to report a case of needle fracture in third molar exodontia during lower alveolar, lingual and buccal right nerve block, referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgery and traumatology department of the State University of Maringá. After clinical examination and tomography assessment, the patient underwent a surgical procedure to remove the needle in the operating room under general anesthesia and aid of trans-operative fluoroscopy. Therefore, we conclude that fluoroscopy is an extremely important resource in cases such as this one, since it allows a guided procedure, reducing the surgical trauma of an exploratory surgery.

Measles is a viral, infectious, preventable disease that requires high vaccination coverage in order for herd immunity to be achieved and for outbreaks to be prevented. This study aims to identify the possible causes and consequences of low measles vaccination coverage. This is an integrative literature review based on original articles published in electronic databases between 2015 and 2021. Said articles were identified through controlled descriptors, prepared for structural and methodological evaluation, and categorized using the thematic content analysis technique. After application of the inclusion, exclusion and checklist criteria, six publications remained. Two thematic categories were defined: “Possible causes of low measles vaccination coverage worldwide” and “Consequences of low measles vaccination coverage”. Evidenced causes included: absent, incomplete or late vaccination schedule, late implementation of mass vaccination, insufficient stock of vaccines, and increased hesitation on the part of parents. The consequences were an increase in measles cases, in the risk of mortality, and in the health expenses of the public sector. It was concluded that a reduction in measles vaccination coverage has the potential to impact the population’s health conditions, to raise morbimortality indicators and to cause losses to public coffers.

Oral injuries in patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) are recurrent, especially during endotracheal intubation, as the presence of the tube added to the teeth in the oral cavity can cause injuries to the tongue and other soft tissues. Ideally, tube stabilization devices should be easy to handle by the hospital staff, should always be available for use in ICUs, in addition to being low cost. The aim of this study was to develop a device for endotracheal tube stabilization and injury prevention in patients. 3D technical drawings were prepared, and the final version of the device was prototyped in polylactic acid and positioned in the patient. When compared to mouthguards described in the literature, it was found that the developed device provided stability for the tube, provided separation of the teeth from the adjacent soft tissues, and prevented the intubated patient from biting the tube, thus contributing to the prevention of traumatic injuries. It was concluded that the device has characteristics that allow stabilization of the endotracheal tube and the prevention of oral lesions in ICU patients, and can be used by hospital nursing staff.
