Recommendations for greater adoption of blended and online learning pedagogies pre-date COVID-19 by many years. However, the uptake and implementation of blended and online learning was largely ignored by lecturers in many contact institutions, despite the introduction of policies and various resources to support such a shift. In this chapter, we critically explore the reluctance of lecturers to adopt blended and online learning pedagogies, drawing on the Epistemic Pedagogic Device (EPD) of Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) and the elements of Archer’s theory of Social Realism to explicate the roles and contestations among the various stakeholders involved in teaching and learning in higher education institutions. In particular, we examine the struggles for legitimacy faced by instructional designers and academic developers in the sites of teaching and learning, sites which have traditionally been controlled by lecturers. We posit that successful, sustainable implementation of online and blended learning requires institutional recognition of multiple stakeholders as legitimate role-players in teaching and student learning.

Karin Coonrod, Davina Moss
In this conversation with her dramaturg Davina Moss, director Karin Coonrod lays out her vision for directing The Merchant of Venice in the Ghetto. She discusses production strategies, casting choices – including her decision to cast five actors as Shylock – and how her own personal aesthetic influenced the production. The script was adapted for this site-specific production, and Moss explores the decisions made to edit and rearrange the text to tell the story that more interested Coonrod. Finally, the two reflect on how this work experience affected them personally, as Shakespeareans, as Jews (by birth or marriage), and as artists.

Carol Chillington Rutter
Extraordinary in itself, the 2016 performance of The Merchant in the Venetian Ghetto produced an equally extraordinary collateral performance. Staged in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a ‘Mock Appeal in the Matter of Shylock vs Antonio’ was heard by a bench presided over by Ruth Bader Ginsberg. A curious aspect of the Appeal was that Portia made an appellee. This essay investigates the decision to try Portia. What cultural, political, religious needs were served by bringing Portia into court? Thinking about Justice and Mercy, law, bonds, and love, this essay asks: when the verdict was pronounced, was antisemitism recuperated by misogyny?

The aim of this project is to analyze the belonging of Carthage to the Hellenistic World and the Hellenized parameters. The attainment of these objectives will be done through several limited divisions where it is analyzed and related with the performance of the Hellenistic cities. The specificity of these study plots will be: an analysis of trade, subdivided in turn into Evesperides and Sicilia, an economic study, an urban-architectural investigation, a numismatic examination and some religious appreciations. Likewise, a priori, a definition of Punic culture and Carthaginian civilization before the arrival of the Hellenistic world will be rised and, a posteriori, a brief reflection on the Hellenization of Carthage and some concrete conclusions.

In the history of excavations at Carthage, Byron Khun de Prorok has been relegated to a secondary position, more linked to a pseudo-archaeology and the looting of antiquities than to a scientific work addressed to solve the historical problems of the city. This article does not focus on presenting the development of his surveys to the remains of the Tunisian archaeological site, but rather to highlight the ability of Prorok, an artist and dilettante archaeologist, to enter the framework of the archaeology of the French Protectorate, avoiding a strong nationalist opposition, and obtaining the support for his projects of prestigious personalities, such as Louis Poinssot, Father Delattre or Stephane Gsell. Thereby, for five years, he became the interlocutor between the French and American academic worlds, and obtained the management of important archaeological sites, such as the tophet.

In studying the dedications to Mars Augustus in Africa Proconsularis and Numidia, a small group of inscriptions of Pontii attracted my attention for the wide chronological period of reference and for the peculiar character of some texts; not last, the alternation between pagan and christian features seemed to me worthy of interest. In the paper, after the presentation and discussion of each document, some overall considerations are put forward on this group of inscriptions, which represents an interesting mark of the change in the epigraphic landscape in a necropolis of central-eastern Numidia between the IIIrd and IVth centuries AD.

A good epigraphic collection in Calama from the first half of the 1st century A.D. to the beginning of the 5th century, testifies to a long history corroborated by an important urban heritage. The study of this epigraphic fund, composed mainly by pagan Latin epitaphs, allowed us to understand the different types of Calamense denominations, to understand their marital strategies and to establish the origins of cognomina and unique names
