The grid and market hub is a core development of InteGrid, an H2020 project, which has recently entered its demonstration phase. This central and neutral hub aims to demonstrate the key role of the DSO in the energy transition, namely in a scenario foreseen to have a large-scale dissemination of DERs, being them small generation (PV, wind), electric vehicles, facing big growths or storage devices, with continuously decreasing prices. The Hub directly addresses several roles of the DSO, particularly as a market enabler, data manager and stakeholder manager, bridging the gap between distribution technical needs and new energy services for other distribution grid stakeholders. We overview the grid and market bub concept and how it is deployed under the InteGrid project to unlock data-driven services as neutral stakeholder.

The consequences of the energy system transformation are causing a far-reaching change in the electricity supply system. In particular, the function of medium-voltage (MV) networks has changed: In addition to distributing energy from the high-voltage level to the low-voltage level, MV networks also integrate the energy from renewable energy sources. Therefore, grid expansion plays a central role in meeting infrastructural challenges. A possible solution is the integration of direct current (DC) technologies into the distribution grid. DC lines can enable higher energy transport and provide flexibility in the form of reactive power for voltage stability. Hence, this study describes a method for optimising the integration of DC power lines into MV networks. Exemplary results show the influence of decreasing converter costs on the usage of DC technology in the grid planning process.

The fleet of smart distributed energy resource (DER) inverters is expected to grow rapidly as a result of growing DER penetration levels and requirements in interconnection standards/rules such as IEEE Std 1547-2018. Smart inverters have the potential to help to maintain and/or enhance grid safety, reliability and customer affordability. Advanced modelling and analytical capabilities are required from distribution planning tools to understand the full potential of smart inverters. This study presents enhanced smart inverter modelling and simulation features included in a recent release of the open-source distribution system modelling and simulation software suite OpenDSS. The enhanced features include detailed modelling of the inverter capability curve along with significant improvements to the simulation speed and convergence. The enhanced features make it more practical to perform long quasi-static time-series load flow simulations with thousands of time steps on large-scale utility feeder models with up to thousands of autonomously controlled smart inverters. Some of the enhanced speed, convergence and other features are demonstrated on a large-scale real U.S. utility feeder model with >1100 solar photovoltaic systems.

The electrification of heat and transport, and the increased penetration of distributed generation (DG), have the potential to significantly impact thermal constraints, voltage saturation and fault levels of Northern Ireland Electricity Networks (NIEN) ‘last mile’ low-voltage (LV) networks. To avoid/defer expensive reinforcement to address such challenges, NIEN in collaboration with WSP will trial active network management (ANM) scheme to maximise the utilisation of existing assets with flexibility that can benefit from sharing spare capacity between neighbouring LV networks. To do so, an approach to change the configuration and operation of stressed LV networks from ‘radial’ to ‘meshed’ will be considered. However, such a radical change in the network configuration will require LV protection strategies to be re-evaluated. In response to this, this study provides the following contributions: (1) presenting an overview of the NIEN ANM scheme, (2) investigation of the potential impact on the LV protection when the NIEN ANM is implemented (through modelling and simulation studies under different short-circuit fault conditions), and (3) providing recommendations on LV protection arrangements that are required to deliver reliable protection operation with a good level of selectivity for enabling resilient operation of the ANM scheme.
