Accurate load forecasting models are required for an efficient operation of energy systems and therefore, they have received increased attention from researches within this field of study. Several mathematical methods have been developed for load forecasting. This work aims at the implementation and evaluation of a modular regression model. Within this study, it is evaluated whether or not the model is suitable to predict different cumulated load profiles and if demand response incentives considered in the model can improve the accuracy.

An original three-layer planning model of energy storage systems (ESSs) in active distribution networks is proposed in this study, taking demand response (DR) and network reconfiguration (NR) into account. In order to handle the uncertainties of distributed generations and loads, a practical scenario-generation method based on seasonal characteristics is put forward. Based on the time of use price, an ESSs charging and discharging strategy is presented. The mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem is converted to a mixed-integer second-order cone (SOCP) and the SOCP and an improved hybrid intelligent algorithm are applied to solve the ESSs planning model. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model and solution methods are proven through the improved IEEE 33-bus system. The case study demonstrates the positive effect of DR and NR on optimising system operation and reducing total cost.

Enedis tests the use of flexibility services to optimise grid planning, work planning and operations on the distribution network. Flexibility services will facilitate the renewable energy sources (RES) integration into the grid. Market-based procurement will be used consistently with the Clean Energy Package, and Enedis opted for a pragmatic two-step approach to procure these services: first, assess the capacity and appetite of market players through an innovative Request For Information (RFI) platform. Second, launch competitive tendering while ensuring a level playing field and the development of competition. Market-based flexibility services for distribution system operators (DSOs) do not exist so far. Acting as a market enabler, Enedis chose to build the market in cooperation with its stakeholders, aiming at a mutual understanding of each other's needs and expectations. The major themes of work are the following: identification and quantification of flexibility opportunities, tendering, contracts, measurement, settlement, operation processes, transmission system operator and DSO cooperation etc. They reflect the challenges associated with the use of market mechanisms to conclude flexibility contracts. Flexibility services market characteristics (remuneration of flexibility, tests, penalties etc.) will thus reflect the requirements of all stakeholders. This cooperation started in November 2018 and is an ongoing work.
