In conjuction with his concern for preserving liberties in Republics, Machiavelli is known as one of the first modern political thinkers to point out the benefits derived from social unrest and internal conflicts in any society that seeks the vivere libero . Three centuries later and in a context of very different concerns, Mill presented systematic antagonism as the main device by which stability and progress can be reconciled and freedom can be ensured within democratic societies. This article examines the way in which both thinkers theorized the nature of conflict, its limits as well as its effects, and finally, the areas in which they can or should be channeled.

This article reflects on the idea of equality from a gender perspective. Specifically, it states that the current gap between formal and effective equality should be addressed using a transformative approach to patterns of socioeconomic, cultural and personal relations. To do so, it is crucial to deal with two issues: the necessity to conjoin equality with freedom and pluralism, understood as interdependent values; and secondly, to conceive equality as a universal and ethical referent. In this sense, the article proposes the use of a musical formula, the enharmonic principle, as perhaps the best metaphor to understand the idea and practice of equality in contemporary societies.

It might seem outlandish to examine the theoretical links between the work of Claude Lefort, a left-wing French student of democracy, and Leo Strauss, the radical critic of modern mass democracy, usually associated with conservativism in North American political thought. Nonetheless, every reader of Lefort is certainly aware of his respect for Strauss’s reading of Machiavelli and for the Straussian insights into modern political thought. This article tries to make sense of Lefort’s dialogue with Strauss, both in its explicit and implicit aspects, focusing on the fundamental points of agreement and on the most relevant differences between the two authors.

A tendency towards truth indicates an inclination towards being in tune with the world and inserting one’s own life within it. It is a process that requires the concurrence of other viewpoints, fragmentary and diverse, the incorporation of which ensures the objectivity of knowledge and respects the richness of what it is real. Knowledge requires habits of coexistence and communication that establish a common space for equality and plurality in exchanges. Michel de Montaigne, in the troubled sixteenth century, celebrated the pleasure of discussion and exhorted people to travel as a form of avoiding personal pride and increasing their being through the encounter. A loyal search for truth in conjunction with courtesy in controversy would entail the promotion of civic virtues beyond mere tolerance and bring about attitudes of mutual interest, cordiality, dialogue, inclusion and care for that which is common.
