In his recently published book, Origins of Functionalist Theory, Edward R. DeZurco traces the varying concepts of the theory of form as function to about the year 1850 and speculates on writers who may have influenced the similar theories of Horatio Greenough. But although he includes several—most notably Ralph Waldo Emerson and Edward R. Garbett—with whose work Greenough was familiar,1 he leaves out of consideration one late eighteenth-century aesthetician—Archibald Alison—whose views in at least two areas are remarkably parallel to Greenough's own. DeZurco does indeed summarize the fundamental points of Alison's theories as they are presented in his Essays on the Nature and Principles of Taste and places them properly in the chronological development of the functionalist concept. He does not, however, consider the possibility of a specific influence of the Scotch rhetorician on the American sculptor.

General Renaissance Conference The Graduate School of the Ohio State University presented the Fourth Annual Conference on the Humanities, October 27 and 28, Subject of the conference was “The Renaissance Image of Man and the World.” The emphasis of this conference was on what Renaissance men and women thought of themselves and their age, their own interpretations as seen in their music, art, literature, philosophy, and science. Representing the field of art, visiting scholar Professor H. W. Janson of New York University, spoke on “The Image of Man in Renaissance Art—from Donatello to Michelangelo.” A Renaissance art exhibition opened at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in honor of the conference.

University art conferences throughout the country frequently discuss “The Responsibility of the University to the Art Student,” I'll reverse this and talk briefly about the responsibilities of the art student in the University. Of course this immediately becomes the responsibility of the student himself, and involves the integrity of the whole University program which in turn gets right back to teachers like myself—and there goes the title of this talk.
