There exists a global crisis in the management of water generating a necessity for the search of sustainable alternatives. These can be mechanisms such as Payments for Hydrological Environmental Services (pes), economic tools that promote the conservation of bodies of water from the change in the paradigm of use and conservation in societies. A documented review was conducted on the implementation of PES in four countries of Latin America —Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Ecuador— to identify tools in environmental management, with the objective of proposing guidelines that optimize the application of mechanisms in Colombia. This optimization is to be achieved through a recompilation of the experiences in the development and integral analysis of these mechanisms within the social, normative, economic, and institutional context.

Multifunctionality of agriculture is considered a legitimate objective of agricultural policies. Nevertheless, the debate to establish the best way to promote these functions as a whole is still open. This paper analyzes the legitimacy of European aid to agriculture from a local perspective, and under the argument of multifunctionality. To this end, the banana sector of the Canary Islands was selected as a case study, where a participatory study was conducted with all of the agents involved. The results show that European aid to this sector contributes to the achievement of social and environmental objectives. However, it was revealed that the aid should make a more concentrated effort to attain modernization and differentiation of local productive quality, and to promote competitiveness

In the context of Minho´s regional dynamics, some statistical indicators highlight serious socio-spatial and socio-economic disparities, not only between social groups, but also between sectors (agriculture, industry and services) and socio-spatial areas with different levels of (under)development. From the historical-sociological perspective, this study briefly describes socio-demographic change in the northern region, more specifically in the municipality of Barcelos. Territorial imbalances were detected in comparing more central municipalities with those of the interior. Besides this, the aim is to detect other dimensions of social inequality such as infrastructure, unemployment, and health; social security and housing, on the one hand, and culture and education on the other. Despite some improvements in infrastructure and facilities, the Minho region is permeated by social, educational and cultural disparities. This assymetrical situation reproduces at the regional and local level an unequal national distribution of health, education and cultural resources. In the current context of globalisation, these indicate the analytical importance of the centre-peripheral theory, not only at the global economy level, but also at the national and regional levels.

Rural tourism impacts more than just the political and socio-economic dimensions of rural regions. Introduced into the Guanenta Province in Colombia, rural tourism is a new function of the region that can be understood as resulting from planning efforts, put forth by the system of governance and taken up by the regional culture, in a long-term and cumulative process. This dynamic leads to a set of transformations for its implementation and consolidation, which reconfigure the spatial structure in the region. Our understanding of this process helps to explain the dynamics of regional construction over the course of the last decade.
