This paper highlights a real time practical case study of 40% Fixed Series Compensation (FSC) installed at 1200/765/400/220 kV Wardha Substation, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., WR - I (Western Region - I), India under Western Region Strengthening Scheme (WRSS). The novel finding in this research work is the operation of Spark gap in co-ordination with Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) during various internal fault conditions, according to the threshold energy which contradicts the assumptions made in some of the previous research works. For increasing the power capacity and meeting the rising power demands, it is implemented on 400 kV double circuit Raipur - Wardha Line (375 km). This paper focuses on the effects of FSC on the specified line studied by comparing simulated results with real time data. It also dwells into fault analysis aspects of the specified line with FSC.

Recent trends and also statistics show that the hashing concept has been gaining importance because its application lies in the area of authentication, retrieval and recognition. The proposed hashing method CCQ-CSLBP (Compressed CSLBP with Correlation Coefficient) for authentication utilized correlation coefficient as a weight factor in CSLBP. CSLBP is a texture operator, whose performance is better than LBP, in terms of rotation invariance, differentiation power and less number of histogram bin. In CSLBP, histogram of each sub block is represented by 16 bin. Reduction in number of histogram bin is achieved by the flipped difference concept. Proposed method takes the advantage of correlation coefficient as a boosting factor during histogram construction, to increase the discrimination power of compressed CSLBP. With the use of correlation coefficient, results of CSLBP improved, in terms TPR and FPR. CCQ-CSLBP is evaluated, based on normalized hamming distance and ROC characteristics.

Face recognition has been gaining popularity for long time in various fields of human computer interaction. Moreover face recognition technique is widely used for automatic biometric security control, document verification, criminal investigation etc. In this paper we propose a new approach of using PCA based face recognition method for human verification. PCA based method seems to be interested due to its simplicity and better accuracy. In our proposed method two stages of authentication are performed for recognizing a single candidate individual. At first stage the candidate face is matched with all stored faces and only few best matched samples are isolated to use as second stage training samples. Here in both stages PCA is used for extracting significant features of face. Our proposed approach showed 1.5% better accuracy for ORL face database and 0.52% better accuracy for Face94 database.

Power recordings obtained from different grids have different patterns which are not clearly predictable. These power line data can be used to identify the region of recordings by detecting their pattern. Normally The Electric Network Frequency(ENF) of power distribution network is used to estimate the location of recordings. Existing techniques estimate ENF around the base frequency of 50/60Hz. In this paper a technique is proposed to classify the grids by exploiting the ENF at different harmonics of nominal frequency. This method does not rely on power references to differentiate amongst various power grids. It applies feature extraction techniques of clean power signal which can be measured directly from the power mains through electrical outlet using a step-down transformer and voltage divider.

Now-a-days, sustainability of power quality is a major concern. Speed control of an AC motor is required for several industrial applications, but is often difficult to achieve as the AC motor runs at fixed speed. Hence, power electronic devices are introduced in the system. Due to the development in power electronic devices with improved dependability and cheaper cost, results in the growth of modern variable frequency drive (VFD) which can control the speed of an induction motor by adjusting the frequency of the machine [8]. They produce harmonic components and distort the supply mains, which in turn adversely affect the power quality. To outlive the difficulty, a technique named multi-pulse rectifier is developed. The main objective of this work is to reduce the impact of harmonic distortion using variable frequency drives (VFDs). Modeling, simulation and performance analysis of VFD is done based on Total harmonic distortion (THD) [8]. The proposed topology deals with the THD comparison for 6, 12 and 24 pulses. All the simulations are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink.

With widespread availability of mobile communication devices and public WiFi grids, peer to peer services and applications have become feasible and attractive. Educational campuses have strong intranet infrastructure which provides near complete WiFi coverage. While this is adequate for client-server applications and browsing etc, it doesn't support p2p applications. We have proposed a hybrid architecture for p2p services where the infrastructure network is used for providing directory services and moving data seamlessly across WiFi access-points. It does this by implementing Mobile IP6 on the intranet along with maintaining real-time directories of the mobile nodes. Mobile IP is the protocol in which the mobile node can stay connected with same network connections transparently irrespective of current point of attachment to IP network. While a number of p2p protocols and services exist, robust realtime application implementations have been difficult due to complexity in implementing directory and other network services. Here we have designed a p2p event scheduler which uses the real time directories and have presented our findings.

The use of polymeric insulators for overhead transmission and distribution has increased over ceramic insulators in recent years. However, polymer insulators are subjected to degradation due to corona among many other problems. This is further enhanced by the presence of moisture in air as also by acid rain. In this work degradation of polymer insulators is studied by subjecting to corona under conditions of normal air, normal fog and acidic fog separately. The extent of degradation is determined by hydrophobicity, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images and tensile strength measurements. Corona degradation in presence of fog is found to be more severe than that in the presence of normal air.

Mobile Wireless sensor network consist of number of sensor nodes and each node works on limited battery life. Several factors like routing protocol, nodes mobility and energy can affect the performance of a WSN. This paper presents fuzzy rule based simulation system for WSN to predict the node's mobility and energy. Mobility prediction provides stable path for network and energy prediction increases lifetime of the network. Network simulator NS3 is used for simulation result.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is one of the most recent and effective video technologies to diagnose gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, such as ulcer in GI tract. Because of long duration of WCE videos, it is a burden for the physicians to analyze large number of image frames. This time consuming process often leads to human error. Hence, an automatic scheme for ulcer image detection in WCE video has great demand. In this paper, an automatic scheme based on image histogram is proposed to detect ulcer frames in WCE video. In order to compute the histograms from pixel values, instead of using conventional RGB color plane, gray scale is used, which offers the scope of utilizing brightness of color. Based on extensive experimentation, it is found that histogram patterns, obtained from ulcer and non-ulcer images in gray scale, exhibit significant differences. Cumulative pixel number of the pixel values in gray scale over an optimum threshold is chosen as feature through histogram analysis. Moreover, this 1-D feature offers computational advantage and ease of implementation. For the purpose of classification, the support vector machine (SVM) supervised classifier is used. Also, performance of the proposed method obtained from several other classifiers is compared. The performance of the proposed method is tested on several WCE images taken from publicly available WCE video database and it is found that, the proposed method offers superior classification performance, in comparison to that obtained by some existing methods, in terms of accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity.
