Previous research has allowed developing and characterizing an expanded polystyrene waste (EPS) based insulation material that can be used to manufacture plates, providing job opportunities to unemployed or vulnerable social groups. By working together with a local recycling cooperative, the production processes needed for their manufacture on a scale suitable for commercialization were determined. The goal of this research is to analyze these production processes and identify the critical aspects that make the technology’s implementation and management viable. The methodology used involves i. the product’s adaptation; ii. determining supplies and resources for its feasibility; iii. detecting the most critical production processes; and, iv. adapting to the particular case of application. A set of minimum requirements is obtained to develop a productive venture. In addition, the most critical processes related to the separation and obtaining of the EPS and its continuous supply over time, are identified. The results summarize contributions to replicate and make this experience sustainable.

The response of earthen walls to humidity is a relevant issue when evaluating surface and interstitial condensation. This article analyzed the behavior against the humidity of three buildings with wattle and daub walls, taking into account the different layers of mud plaster and Castilla reeds. First, these were evaluated using the Iram 11.625 Standard and with the outdoor design data temperature, the indoor design temperature, and the thermal properties of the materials, obtaining the surface and dew temperature values for each case. It was observed that surface condensation did not occur in any case and for interstitial condensation, in all cases, in the layer close to the exterior reed there was the possibility of condensation, which can be optimized by using insulation on the outer or inner face depending on the climatic conditions. Based on in situ measurements with hobo dataloggers, indoor and outdoor temperature and relative humidity records were taken for winter. Surface and dew temperature curves were plotted and it was observed that in all cases the dew temperature values are lower than the surface temperature, verifying the lack of surface condensation.

More than ever before, the COVID-19 crisis and the need to spend longer periods of time in our places of residence, have highlighted the need to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and ventilation to reduce the risks of airborne virus transmission. Added to the need to progressively improve the energy performance of our buildings to achieve carbon neutrality is this completely contrary new requirement, which forces reconsidering the ventilation issue, its standards, and technological solutions to improve IAQ and limit the risks of contagion inside our homes, without losing sight of the goals that climate change imposes on us. Chile is seeking strategies to generate sustainable, energy-efficient, and comfortable housing, which must be reconsidered in light of Covid-19. Greater permanence inside the home revealed the precariousness of the lifestyles the most vulnerable families face; sometimes exposing them to environments that are risky for their health. The objective of this research was to estimate the impact of Covid-19 on CO2 indoor air concentrations, as a result of the intensity of use (occupation) of the home, considering envelopes with different levels of airtightness. Using an experimental methodology, based on simulations with the DesignBuilder software, the CO2 concentrations of four types of social housing, located in the commune of Coronel, Biobío, Chile, were quantified. The results showed that confinement increased CO2 levels by 16.4%, while the change from the original condition of the envelope to more airtight levels generated an increase of more than 83% in normal use and 97% for periods of confinement.

In recent decades, urban centers have been facing enormous challenges with the increase in natural disasters, and the impossibility of recovering from them. In this context, the objective of this research is to propose resilience and sustainability indicators for Panamanian urban housing by considering the effects of climate change through an extensive analysis of the country's vulnerability. Using qualitative processes, validated by national and international professionals, it was possible to characterize resilient and sustainable housing and develop a proposal of 29 indicators that respond to current and future climate change-related impacts: 15 for resilience and 14 for sustainability. Thus, building a simple useful tool to evaluate the resilience and sustainability of urban housing.

The bioclimatic performance of buildings under climate change scenarios has been extensively studied from a thermo-energy perspective but hardly studied at all from the perspective of indoor daylight sufficiency. This shortcoming is related to the invariability of radiation data in the available weather files of future scenarios. This research proposes identifying the impacts that the variability of radiation data in weather files of future scenarios would have on daylight sufficiency in indoor spaces. The methodology includes the adaptation of available weather files and the running of daylight simulations for hypothetical workspaces located in Medellín, Colombia. The results show differences in the Spatial Daylight Autonomy – SDA metric of up to 18% in different future scenarios. In conclusion, the need is outlined to refine predictions of outdoor daylight availability that allow improving daylight performance evaluations under climate change scenarios.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of concrete with waste tire rubber (WTR) as a partial substitute for sand, considering local materials from the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia, to promote a circular economy. The sand was replaced by WTR (in volume) in four percentages: 0% (reference), 5%, 10%, and 20%, evaluating its mechanical properties (resistance to compression, traction, and bending) and physical properties (specific mass, water absorption, and void index). The results indicate that there is a tendency to decrease with a higher percentage of WTR, both for mechanical resistance and for physical properties, except for the mixture with 5% WTR, which had results comparable to concrete with natural sand. WTR can be used in the local production of concrete up to 5% without compromising its mechanical and physical properties, in addition to having a sustainable approach.

IF 0.5 Q2 Engineering Pub Date : 2022-06-30 DOI: 10.22320/07190700.2022.12.01.05
The present work addresses the problem of natural lighting in educational buildings, focusing on the study of natural lighting strategies that contribute to reaching recommended levels of lighting comfort in classrooms, correct light distribution and glare reduction. In this framework, a building on the campus of the National University of Villa María, Córdoba, Argentina, was analyzed in which the behavior of natural lighting was evaluated using simulation models and in situ measurements. The work was complemented by evaluating the Daylight Glare Probability (DGP) index: verifying the occurrence of glare. The diagnosis showed excess lighting at points close to openings, insufficient lighting at points far from them, low levels of uniformity in the distribution of natural lighting and intolerable glare thresholds. Consequently, a new arrangement of the classroom was proposed, incorporating elements for the redirection of sunlight and its performance was verified. The results of the proposal showed important differences. A significant reduction in lighting levels was achieved, reaching levels of visual comfort for classrooms (300-500 average lux), improvements in the uniformity of natural light, with its consequent verification according to standards, and a significant reduction in glare levels due to penetration direct sun.

This article presents the validation procedure of optimization proposals for a compact-typology kindergarten prototype, following passive bioclimatic design guidelines, using dynamic simulation physical models calibrated with onsite measurements. The objective is to verify the parameters for the glazed area (gA), weighted average solar absorptance (), and total envelope area (envelopeA), using them as input data to obtain correlations of glazing Factors (gF) into a tool to estimate optimal glazed areas, aiming at integrating thermal and visual comfort in the design of educational spaces, in the Very Hot-Humid climate of the Argentine Northeast. As a result, a reduction of up to 72% was obtained in November, the most unfavorable month for school activities, for cooling requirements, by lowering the solar absorptance of exterior surfaces to 0.25, with a glazed area per floor area ratio of 17%, which made noteworthy improvements possible in the spatial daylight distribution, a key resource for the comprehensive development of children from Initial Schooling Levels.
