: The distribution of floodplain vegetation is mainly affected by hydrological and hydraulic processes. In this study, we investigated changes in the vegetation distribution due to flood discharge alteration, and the relationship between the vegetation types and the flood frequency during the last ten-year period in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream. Flood discharge of the Cheongmi-cheon Stream tended to decrease from 2006 to 2016. It has greatly decreased to less than 160 m 3 /s since 2013. This resulted in the settlement of Phragmites japonica to the wide sand bar at the Cheongmi-cheon Stream, even though it had sparse vegetation before 2013. The sand bar was fully covered with P. japonica in 2016. Vegetation communities in the floodplain were classified by dominant species, i.e. the annual-hygrophytic, the perennial hygrophytic and the mesophytic communities. Analysis of the relationship between the vegetation communities and the flood frequency shows the annual hygrophytes, perennial hygrophytes and the mesophytes communities distributed in the range of under 1 year, 1-10 year and over 7 year flood inundation area, respectively. In conclusion, distribution of the floodplain vegetation is closely related with the flood discharge and frequency in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream.

: A new immobilization technique of nanoscale TiO 2 powder to expanded polystyrene (EPS) balls with temperature-controlled melting method was developed, and the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 powder-embedded EPS balls were evaluated using methylene blue (MB) solution under ultraviolet irradiation ( λ = 254 nm). Based on the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and associated energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis, the components of the intact EPS balls were mainly carbon and oxygen, whereas those of TiO 2 -immobilized EPS balls were carbon, oxygen, and titanium, indicating that relatively homogenous patches of TiO 2 and glycerin film were coated on the surface of EPS balls. Based on the comparison of degradation efficiencies of MB between intact and TiO 2 -immobilized EPS balls under UVC illumination, the degradation efficiencies of MB can be significantly improved using TiO 2 -immobilized EPS balls, and surface reactions in heterogeneous photocatalysis were more dominant than photo-induced radical reactions in aqueous solutions. Thus, TiO 2 -immobilized EPS balls were found to be an effective photocatalyst for photodegradation of organic compounds in aqueous solutions without further processes (i.e., separation, recycling, and regeneration of TiO 2 powder). Further study is in progress to evaluate the feasibility for usage of buoyant TiO 2 -immobilized EPS to inhibit the excessive growth of algae in rivers and lakes.

: This study investigated the hydraulic impact scope and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration distribution by the micro-bubble aeration in the Juksan Lake located in Asan city in Chungcheongnam-do province. A tracing experiment for hydraulic impact scope was used which constituted a 20% rhodamine solution. A 160 m-guideline was installed in the horizontal direction of the micro-bubble jet flow and the rhodamine concentration, water temperature, and DO concentration were measured at depths of 1 m, 2 m, and 3 m at intervals of 10 m. In the Juksan Lake, the effective range of jet flow discharged by the micro-bubble generator was about 40 m, and after then the jet plume moved up to 80 m to 120 m through the advection and diffusion processes of ambient water. DO concentration in the lake was maintained at 7.4-12.6 mg/L during tracking experiment. The DO of the lake sediments improved from 0.2 mg/L to 8.0 mg/L after applying micro-bubble aeration. In conclusion, the micro-bubble aeration can be an effective technology for the management and improvement of water quality in an agricultural reservoir.
