Summary Research has established that Luca Signorelli's puzzling depiction of Pan can be interpreted as a visual programme of the (Neo)Platonic academy in Careggi and a tribute to Marsilio Ficino and Lorenzo de’ Medici. The picture portrays the nature god in his Orphic‐Pythagorean guise—as an exemplification of the human condition (firmly rooted in the sensual world while aspiring to the divine). Our thesis is that Signorelli's mythological “Sacra Conversazione” also contains a representative of what the Neoplatonists considered the motor of the apperception of God—Love. The youth lying on the ground at the front is, in our opinion, Eros. Initially he had triumphed over Pan, afflicting him with an unrequited passion for the nymph Syrinx, but now it is the nature god that triumphs: by substituting a divine musical instrument (the panpipes) for the woman, he has “sublimated” physical love. The motif used to express the idea of sublimation is curious: with her pipe, Syrinx, symbol of the reed (left, in the a...

Summary Carl Gustav Pilo is renowned as the most outstanding painter of Scandinavia in the 18th century, creator of an original version of the rococo‐style. This article deals with and solves some problems concerning his life and work, which have until now obscured the understanding of his development as artist. The actual survey of his oeuvre opens up for the possibility of a new evaluation of his oeuvre. It seems that he may originally have wished to work, not only as a painter of portrait but also in the field of religious and classical, “historical” themes. Circumstances however allowed for only few paintings of this kind, until he received the command of Gustaf III, the Swedish king, who ordered a representation of his coronation in Stockholm. In this great work, which occupied over ten years, until his death, he caught the opportunity, combining his mastership in composition, light and colour, to give a vivid, imaginative picture, where a multitude of portrait figures together form a monument over t...
