To implement distance learning programs involves; 1) systematic process to arrive at consensus, 2) defined steps and factors, and 3) critical planning issues. Summary form only given. This presentation summarizes the new mobile and broadband capabilities of currently planned Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications systems. The paper discusses the wireless communications revolution and the role of LEO constellations in providing affordable wireless access to narrow and broadband digital communications for all areas of the world. Our future will include many LEO networks providing alternative space-based wireless, digital, global communications utilities. Comparisons are made of the services, features and capabilities of these new "Little" LEO's, "Big" LEO's and "Broadband" LEO Constellations on the horizon.

The Redwood Project is a collaboration of computer scientists and Earth scientists at the University of California, whose goal is to design, build, and put into practical use a distributed information system that effectively supports intensive computational and storage requirements, such as those evidenced by Earth science applications. A key objective is to support "power harnessing", the ability to concentrate as much of the distributed power available in a large-scale system to meet the demands of any single application. A service-based network software architecture provides the framework for network-integrated computing with power harnessing. In addition, Redwood technologies include a hierarchical wide-area distributed storage architecture, a wide-area high-speed network with quality of service provisions, and an "Experimentalist's Workstation" that uses an active document paradigm as the user's interface to the rich tool and data environment provided by Redwood. The project is currently seeking to develop partnerships, both financial and intellectual, with industry and the state and federal government.

InfoSleuth: networked exploitation of information using semantic agents InfoSleuth:使用语义代理的信息网络开发

InfoSleuth is a research project at MCC that is developing and deploying new technologies for finding information available both in corporate networks and in external networks, such as networks based on the emerging National Information infrastructure (NII). The InfoSleuth research is based on the Carnot technology that has been developed at MCC over the last four years. Carnot has been successfully used to integrate heterogeneous corporate information resources. The InfoSleuth project will investigate the use of Carnot technology in a more dynamically changing environment, such as the Internet, where new information sources are constantly being added and for which there is no formal control of the registration of new information sources. In this type of environment, traditional techniques for expressing and optimizing database queries are inadequate because of the rapidly changing schema information and the fuzzy nature of the queries.

A new PowerPC microprocessor is designed for desktop companions and high end embedded multimedia applications such as high performance video games with graphics intensive operations. It features a low power consumption of 1.2 watts at 66 MHz at 3.3 volts. The processor is fabricated in a 0.5 micron, 4 level metal CMOS technology resulting in 1 M transistors in a 7.07 mm by 7.07 mm chip size. Dual 4K-byte instruction and data caches coupled to a high performance 64-bit multiplexed bus and separate execution units (branch, float, integer, and load-store units) result in a peak instruction rate of 2 instructions per clock cycle. Low power techniques are used throughout the entire design including dynamically powered down execution units.

The World Wide Web (WWW) generates a significant and growing portion of traffic on the Internet. With the click of a mouse button, a person browsing on the WWW can generate megabytes of multimedia network traffic. WWW's growth and possible network impact merit a study of its traffic patterns, problems, and possible changes. This paper attempts to characterize World Wide Web traffic patterns. First, the Web's HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is reviewed, with particular attention to latency factors. User access patterns and file size distribution are then described. Next, the HTTP design issues are discussed, followed by a section on proposed revisions. Benefits and drawbacks to each of the proposals are covered. The paper ends with pointers toward more information on this area.

The PowerPC 620 RISC microprocessor is the first chip for the application server and technical workstation product line within the PowerPC family. It utilizes a high performance microarchitecture with many advanced superscalar features to exploit instruction level parallelism. It is the first 64-bit implementation of the PowerPC architecture supporting both 32- and 64-bit application software, and is compatible with the PowerPC 601, PowerPC 603, and PowerPC 604 microprocessors.

The InfoPad project explores the infrastructure and devices required for portable wireless access to the national information infrastructure. The InfoPad model emphasizes high-bandwidth wireless connectivity and moves the computing power of the portable device into the backbone network, where we can provide not only full internet access, but increased computing power as well. By concentrating on I/O for the pad we reduce its cost, weight and power requirements, and increase the effective bandwidth through the greater error tolerance of I/O traffic such as video. We describe the InfoPad model, its infrastructure, and the results of the first prototype. This prototype proved the feasibility of the basic model and developed key technologies such as low-power design methodology and protocols for wireless connections. We also discuss the next generation InfoPad and our future plans.

The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) is a client-server system whose goal is to provide the illusion of infinite storage for a range of applications. The first deployed application is backup and archive services. ADSM is a configurable system targeted to serve any client at user installations with heterogeneous architectures that offers the same level of data management for LANs, midrange and mainframe systems. ADSM moves the responsibilities of backup and archive media management to the server while maintaining the benefits of local workstation systems. In ADSM, incremental backups are all that a user needs to do to restore its data with maximum performance. The ADSM server has been deployed in five IBM and two non-IBM platforms, while the ADSM clients operate in more than twelve IBM and non-IBM platforms.

Technical issues in hypermedia authoring systems 超媒体创作系统中的技术问题

We present key issues that hypermedia authoring systems must address to be successful. Rapid growth in consumer interest and computer capabilities have increased the expectations from hypermedia software. Meanwhile, hypermedia authors are scrambling to make the best use of new media, new authoring metaphors, new interaction techniques, and new delivery concepts. Only extensible systems designed to accommodate hypermedia scripting issues will survive. Towards this end, we discuss a number of technical concerns important to hypermedia authoring. We compare and contrast a number of currently available authoring systems. This analysis will help in the design of future systems.
