This article examines the developments and changes that took place in the Western Galilee Palestinian Arab villages during the British Mandate period. The article shows that this coastal area has underwent a major transformation, as in most coastal areas of Palestine. These include economic, demographic, and urban transformations. The study of this group of Palestinian villages shows the extent of the development of the Palestinian countryside, which contradicts many of the historical narrative that described villages and rural areas as backward. The presence of developed economic branches in some of the villages, such as tourism, small hotels, fishing, leisure culture, are proof of this.

Unreconciled Strivings of ‘Exilic Consciousness’: Critical Praxis of Resistance in Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin “流放意识”的不调和斗争:苏珊·阿布哈瓦《杰宁的早晨》中反抗的批判实践

This article discusses how Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin, its thematic concerns and aesthetics, are developed in tandem with the discourse of diaspora and exilic consciousness leading to critical praxis. It traces the interactions between exilic consciousness and identity construction in the context of resistance literature. These interactions exhibit the author's ability to be inside and outside discourses of struggle producing a model in which exile challenges bigoted struggles, hence the evolution of critical praxis. In the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Abulhawa represents another humanistic voice that resists dominant political narratives by dismantling their hegemonic power structure.

Canaanite Genocide and Palestinian Nakba in Conversation: A Postcolonial Exercise in Bi-directional Hermeneutics

David Ben-Gurion's attempt to forge a collective Israeli identity rooted in the biblical conquest myth adopted a bi-directional hermeneutic: biblical text and modern reality were mutually illuminating. While Ben-Gurion read Scripture ‘from above’, with the eyes of the IDF, Edward Said called for readings ‘from below’, with the eyes of the Canaanites. Following Said, this paper reads the Conquest narrative and the Nakba bi-directionally, tracing four themes: (1) Depopulation and dispossession, (2) Traitors and Tricksters, (3) Spoils of War, (4) Incomplete expulsion. The exercise cautions those who see both narratives as zero-sum games only one side of which merits moral consideration.

From Karm al-Khalil to Kerem Avraham: A British Settler-Colonial Outpost Near Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century

Kerem Avraham was a farm for Jewish labourers established by Christian Zionist James Finn, the influential British consul in Jerusalem, and his wife Elizabeth, in 1854. Ostensibly intended to provide relief for the Jewish inhabitants of Jerusalem during a famine, the farm was in fact a deeply ideological project which foreshadowed the Zionist agricultural settlements in Palestine in the later nineteenth century. This paper chronicles the farm's development, and later influence on settler-colonial theory and practice.

Palestine's Absent Cities: Gender, Memoricide and the Silencing of Urban Palestinian Memory

Before the Nakba a significant process of urbanisation had occurred in Palestine, leading to substantial changes in gender relations and women's status. However, following the 1948 war, the existence of a vibrant urban social and gendered reality in Palestine was dismissed and erased, by both Palestinian and Zionist narratives; it was replaced by exclusively rural memory. This article analyses how Palestinian society in Israel accepted the Zionist version of history, according to which the modernisation of Arab society in Israel, especially gendered modernity, resulted from Jewish proximity and steps adopted by the state.
