The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate a machine learning model for the early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes to allow for treatments to be applied in the early stages of the disease. Material and methods. A proposed hybrid machine learning model was developed and applied to the Early-stage diabetes risk prediction dataset from the UCI database. The prediction success of the proposed model was compared with other machine learning models. Pearson’s correlation and SelectKBest feature selection methods were employed to examine the relationships between the dataset input parameters and the results. Results. Of the 520 patients included in the dataset, 320 were diagnosed with diabetes and 328 (63.08%) were males. The most commonly observed diabetes diagnosis criterion was obesity (n=482, 83.08%). While the strongest feature detected with Pearson’s correlation was polyuria, the strongest feature detected with SelectKBest was polydipsia. With Pearson’s feature extraction, the most successful machine learning method was the proposed hybrid method, with an accuracy of 97.28%. Using SelectKBest feature selection, the same model was able to predict type 2 diabetes with accuracy of 95.16%. Conclusions. Early detection of type 2 diabetes will allow for a prompter and more effective treatment of the patient. Thus, use of the proposed model may help to improve the quality of patient care and lower the number of deaths caused by this disease.

Knowledge of the medical-psychological and socio-cultural determinants of physical activity (PA) and mental health is still unsatisfactory. A dominance of diagnostic over explanatory studies and a focus on the association of PA and mental health status with unmodified demographic variables characterizes most research in this area. The aim of the proposed project is to determine PA levels and psychological adaptation to stress among students from Poland and Belarus in the context of different anti-pandemic strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. John Paul II University of Applied Sciences in Biala Podlaska (Poland) and Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno (Belarus) were chosen for the study, as despite the universities being located a relatively small distance from each other, they are in different countries and subject to different anti-pandemic strategies. The proposed survey will include approximately 800 medical and health sciences students (approximately 400 from each university). Nine standardized survey instruments will be used: IPAQ-SF, MBI, SWLS, CECS, GSES, Mini-COPE, STAI, TSK, and GHQ-28. The outcome of the research will be the identification of the medical-psychological and socio-cultural determinants that influence psychological adaptation and PA levels of students experiencing different anti-pandemic strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an important risk factor for premature death amongst the Polish population. In 2014, CVD accounted for 45.1% of all deaths. According to a World Health Organization expert analysis published in 2004, around 80% of cases of CVD, stroke and type 2 diabetes mellitus are preventable if the most important risk factors can be addressed. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) defines a constellation of risk factors, including obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, associated with the development of CVD. National cross-sectional research on the health of Poles indicates that over 90% of men and 89% of women have at least one risk factor. It is estimated that in the coming years the number of obese people will increase and the incidence of diabetes and arterial hypertension will increase. This paper presents the most important and effective methods for the treatment of MetS, which include a well-balanced diet, physical activity, vibrotherapy, and pharmacotherapy. Effective action taken early on can reduce not only mortality risk, but also decrease prevalence and disability and improve the quality of life of Polish citizens.
