A pilot-aided scheme for the parameter estimation in Paired Carrier Multiple Access (PCMA) satellite communication systems is proposed in this paper. Recently, the asymmetric application mode of PCMA, which is more efficient and pragmatic than the symmetric mode, has been studied with great interest. In our research, carefully selected pilot sequences have been inserted into the frame in an attempt to achieve better estimation performance with only a very low overhead. The channel estimation method, which is based on Wiener optimal filtering, is also derived with respect to the (quasi-)static selective fading channel environment. Different from the foregoing work, the key result of this paper is the construction of a single module which jointly implements various parameter estimation modules as a whole. As shown in the simulation results, the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional data-aided scheme, especially in the high Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) scenario which is typical in asymmetric PCMA systems.

In this paper, jointly combining advantages of cooperative communication at the physical layer and distributed routing schemes at the network layer, we propose a novel lifetime maximizing cooperative routing (LMCR) algorithm with decode-and-forward cooperative fashion to prolong the lifetime of wireless Ad-hoc networks. Optimal power allocation mechanism is analyzed for both cooperative and non-cooperative links with the constraint of average SER. Subsequently, link costs representing the weighted total consumed power are constructed to avoid the overuse of certain nodes with little energy. In addition, both the transmission energy and circuit energy are considered in energy consumption model. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the efficiency of the proposed routing scheme.

Optical Network has given great contribution to the growth of telecommunication technologies. In the future, high capacity, multi service support and high quality of service or experience are the needy requirements of end users for the optical network. In this article, we reviewed promising optical network architectures such as Service-Oriented-Architecture (SOA) based Optical Distribution Network and Hybrid Wireless-Optical Broadband Access Network (WOBAN). Based on these networks, we propose several user-oriented service guarantee schemes. We deeply investigate the network performance, high bandwidth access, network protection, services mobility support, and resource allocation. All the proposed schemes are implemented on the test-beds. Experimental results indicate that these schemes could improve the service performance, and also verify their validity.

Both orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier (SC) with frequency division multiple access (FDMA) have been regarded as a possible solution for improving the performance of future generation wireless communication systems. OFDM can better exploit the frequency diversity gain while SC-FDMA is less sensitivity to non-linearity of amplifier with lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, a new hybrid multiple access scheme is proposed in order to combine the advantages of both OFDM and SC-FDMA schemes, while the effects of both schemes on the realistic system assumptions of the practical high power amplifier (HPA) model and adaptive modulation/coding (AMC) technique are considered. Our simulation results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and the conclusion is given.

Conventional partial transmit sequence (PTS) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system requires high hardware or high algorithm computational complexity to reduce peak to average power ratio (PAPR) so that signal distortion and power can be reduced during transmission. The Lim's PTS OFDM system is applied to this paper in the beginning with the aim at reducing hardware complexity. Since the emphasis of this paper is placed on subblock partitioning method, we then employ linear subblock partitioning method and realize the multiplications and the additions of radix-2 inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) butterfly diagram with linear characterization. We find that the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) curve of linear subblock partitioning is close to that of non-linear subblock partitioning, and therefore our method can yield the same performance with more hardware complexity reduction.

This paper provides a discussion on the LTE radio-access technology as defined in 3GPP, with specific focus on its TDD component (TD-LTE). Some specific characteristics of TDD, such as interference between uplink and downlink as well as channel reciprocity, are outlined. A discussion on possible evolution paths for the TD-LTE radio-access technology is also presented. Finally, an overview of the performance and capabilities of TD-LTE, in relation to the requirements on IMT-Advanced, is provided.

Natural and man-made disasters can significantly impact both people and environments. Sensor networks have the potential to revolutionize the capture, processing and communication of critical data for use of disaster rescue and relief [1]. In order to provide a dependable rescue capability through dynamically integrating newly developed and legacy sensor systems with other systems and computing, new methodologies are required for the dependable integration of services in heterogeneous environments. In this paper, we present a new architectural model which can proactively self-adapt to changes and evolution occurring in the provision of search and rescue capabilities in a dynamic environment. This approach has been demonstrated through developing and testing a demonstration system for a scenario of disaster area monitoring.

Applying power control into routing protocols in wireless ad hoc networks has become a hot research issue, because rational use of power control in routing protocols can not only reduce network energy consumption but also improve network throughput, packet delivery ratio and other performance of ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose an on-demand routing algorithm based on cross-layer power control termed as CPC-AODV (Cross-layer Power Control Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector). This algorithm builds different routing entries according to the node power levels on demand, and selects the minimum power level routing for data delivery. In addition, CPC-AODV uses different power control policies to transmit data packets, as well as control packets of network layer and MAC layer. Simulation results show that our algorithm can not only reduce the average communication energy consumption, thus prolong the network lifetime, but also improve average end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio.

We propose a novel distributed self-protection scheme for WDM-PONs using circulator-AWG based wavelength router. The novel wavelength router enables proper routing of working and protection lightpaths of the uplink and downlink signals. Automatic protection switching is operated in a distributed control manner and thus ultra-short 0.7-µs protection switching time is achieved. Redundant fibers required for protection are minimized.

A new algorithm namely moving cast shadow elimination based on luminance and texture features (MSELT) to detect moving shadows of vehicles is investigated in this paper. Different from traditional methods only performed in color space, we combine the luminance in the CIE Luv color space and texture feature to determine shadows. The proposed algorithm based on Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) uses the luminance weight in the CIE Luv color space to model background, do texture analysis and detect shadows. Texture analysis is performed by evaluating the gradients in the foreground with the observation that shadow regions present smooth texture characteristics. The experimental results show that this method outperforms results obtained with color space information alone, particularly in detection of vehicles which present similar luminance characteristics with shadows.
