"Think different" to prevent extinction. Connecting Gregory Bateson’s Cybernetic Epistemology with Posthumanism “异想”以防止灭绝。

Gregory Bateson (1904-1980) left a stark warning to humanity; either change how we think or face extinction. He warned that three drivers are leading us to catastrophe; our reliance upon ever developing technology, population increase and the way we think. Bateson offered what he termed a “cybernetic epistemology” as an alternative way of thinking, and I will offer some thoughts about how this might be made more accessible to help us find a route out of the panmorphic crisis described by Simon (2021) of multiple threats to our existence. As part of the discussion, I will outline the concepts of conscious purpose, dualistic thinking, and other Batesonian ideas, including his understanding of “mind” and of schismogenesis, with the hope of encouraging the changes to our thinking that Bateson hoped we might make. I will connect with more recent posthumanist writers who have been directly or indirectly influenced by Bateson and identify common areas of concern, and I suggest that much posthumanist discourse is remarkably similar to Bateson’s cybernetic epistemology.

Witnessing and Bearing Witness. On offering systemic consultations and practices of solidarity at the Uyghur Tribunal.

The experience of offering therapeutic support to the Uyghur Tribunal held in London in June and September 2021 powerfully brought home the critical variations in the meanings of witnessing and bearing witness and what they entail. In this paper, we explore the role of witnessing through offering systemic consultation to those who have experienced human rights violations and those who have witnessed these accounts and discuss our observations about the healing power of acts of resistance/activism.We are four systemic psychotherapists, with a particular interest in narrative practices, and approaches that foreground social justice. With a concern not to become “failed witnesses” which Jessica Benjamin (2014) describes as “a failure of those not involved in the acts of injury to serve the function of acknowledging and actively countering or repairing the suffering and injury that they encounter as observers in the social world”, we attempt here to communicate our experience of witnessing and joining with, through practices of solidarity, those bearing witness at the People's Tribunal held to hear evidence about China's alleged genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghur, Kazakh and other Turkic Muslim populations.

You can experience this Interactive Poster that we presented at the 2022 European Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. In this digital poster using the platform, MIRO, we share learning from designing and hosting the first online edition of the 3rd Autism and Systemic Practice and Research Conference. We describe how we used the online possibilities of Zoom to challenge some of the professional discourses on autism to create a more reflexive conference culture. We propose that good practice for neurodiverse attuned online conferences can be generalisable as good conference practice. Becoming braver through stanza format: Exploring intersecting identities beyond autistic
Pub Date : 2022-04-18 DOI: 10.28963/4.2.5
D. Thibert
In this article, I reflect on my professional journey in multiple contexts, in particular when working with autism was new territory for me. I found it more ethical and easier to express complexity through stanza form. I convey the therapeutic journey of in particular two young people I have worked with, and I highlight other themes that I have come across, using generalised case examples.  I highlight issues of intersectionality, particularly around gender identity, sexuality, culture and racialised identities. Throughout I relay how I work in an ethical way, opening space to promote intersectional expressions in complexity. I reflect on how finding my stanza voice has helped me express complexities more effectively than in prose, using stanzas.

Autism and Learning Disabilities: A relational-intersectional perspective
Pub Date : 2022-04-18 DOI: 10.28963/4.2.7
Francisco Urbistondo Cano
In this article, I develop a relational-intersectional perspective in my work with autistics with learning disabilities and their paid care staff in social care in England. I propose and illustrate a shift from normalisation to depathologisation in autism as it has already occurred with “homosexuality” classified as a mental disorder in the 70s. I also explore the performativity of “being LGBTQ+” and “being autistic” in a neurotypical-heteronormative-ableist-led society. I point out a possible confluence of intersectionality and the social graces model. I also dig into what research tells us about the lives of people with learning disabilities and autism and the lives of care workers in social care. Finally, I emphasise the benefits of working from a relational-intersectional perspective in a relational approach that has social justice at the heart of its values.

Autism in women - under-diagnosed, under-served and under-represented
Pub Date : 2022-04-17 DOI: 10.28963/4.2.3
Rachel Morgan-Trimmer
Autism has historically been seen as primarily a male issue, and these attitudes still persist. The result is that autistic women and girls are going undiagnosed. This leads to huge problems with mental illness, inability to access the services and support they need, and significant social and professional issues, such as long-term unemployment. This article looks at some of the specific issues that affect autistic women, and how to address these, so that autistic women and girls can live the fulfilling lives they deserve.
